On This Date in 1987

May 31, 1987 was a Sunday. That evening, Game 7 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals was played. The 1987 Finals pitted the Edmonton Oilers against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Oilers won the first two games of the series in Edmonton. The two teams then split the next two games in Philadelphia. Many expected the Oilers to wrap up their third Cup in Game 5 at home, however, the Flyers fought hard and won that game. The Flyers then won an emotionally charged Game 6 at the old Spectrum in Philadelphia. Hence, a single game would be required to see who would hoist Lord Stanley's Cup in 1987.

Game 7 started off fast. For the first time during the entire series, the Flyers scored the first goal. The Flyers had a golden opportunity to go ahead 2-0 in the first period, however, the Flyers missed a shot at the Oilers' open net. This would become an omen for what was to come for the Flyers organization over the next two decades.

The Oilers would then quickly tie the game at 1, and after a sweet passing attack up the ice, would take the lead, 2-1. This 2-1 score would hold until the finals minutes of the third period when the Oilers scored an insurance goal. The final score of the Game 7 was Edmonto Oilers 3, Philadelphia Flyers 1. The Oilers won the Cup yet again.

I was eight years old back in 1987. I will admit, after the game, I cried my heart out. I taped that game, and I still have that tape. I have only been able to watch it once or twice, the pain is still too great. With that said, after the game, Channel 57, which was the station that televised the game, did a tribute video for the Flyers. A few months ago, I came across in on Youtube. I am also attaching it to this article, as a way to say thanks for the memories from that special season. In reality, this game, along with the Eagles' Super Bowl have been the closest I have been to seeing a title won by a major pro sports franchise from Philadelphia.

That's sad Christof, but I can say I feel your pain. Imagine living in Minnesota, and Watch arguably one of the Greatest players ever in KG waste a career away because his team won't help him. Imagine having two of the greatest young starting pitchers in the league, yet not wanting to get to attached because you don't know if when their contracts come up, your team will be able to afford them. Imagine living in the State of Hockey, having your Pro Hockey team taken away, and then untill recently, have an owner on your new franchise that threatens to leave if the fans demand him to bring in talent. Imagine having the greatest for average hitter since Ted Williams grow up locally, then get drafted by your team, and you wonder if he will sign a contract with you again. Imagine losing Kirby Puckett in the prime of his career. Imagine seeing a player so similar to Puck in Hunter, and you can't expect to see him again. Imagine watching the 98 Vikings end up with nothing. That's the pain of Minnesota sports in my young lifetime.

I totally know your pain

Philly 1983, Minny - 1987, 1991...

Philly - ALWAYS had 4 sports teams,

Minny - barely kept baseball, nearly lost football, lost basketball once and lost one hockey team (so far)

Um, don't think so

I know a guy who is a Mets/Jets/Nets/Islanders (Iets?) fan. It's rough being him. Not only has it been 20+ years since the last title, but he's also a second-class sports citizen in his own town. He also is probably the only person I know who hopes the Knicks never fire Isiah Thomas.

Funny, I was just reading something about the Lindros trade the other day... It's pretty unbelievable what they gave up for him: Peter Forsberg (a much better player than Lindros, it turns out), Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, two 1st-round picks (one of whom became Jocelyn Thibault, who was in turn traded for Patrick Roy, the cornerstone of the Avalanche mini-dynasty), and $15,000,000 cash. So basically you can point to that single trade as the move that put the Avs over the top and got them 2 Cups. And for what? An injury-prone tool who couldn't lead a Girl Scout troop on a cookie sale.

D21Dub, I remember people in Philly LOVING the trade, I went berserk!

In 1992 I even got into a career-long bet with my college roommate (a lifelong Flyers/hockey fan) - Who would win more titles Shaq or Lindros - I took Shaq. Guess who still brings it up all the time?

The best was when Lindros went to Dallas (where my roommate lives now)

Wow... we are old. I just remember how even though it was a brutal loss, most people just assumed the Flyers would be there every year the way Ron Hextall played. The 80's were very weird to the Flyers...

80's weren't weird for the Flyers. Back then, they were a model NHL franchise. From 74-87, they played in 6 Finals. the weird period for the Flyers came with Lindros. Now, they are just stuck, living in the past, and believing in returning to the 1970's style of hockey will lead them to the promise land.

I meant the stuff off the ice, too - Lindbergh dying and getting another prodigy to replace him (Hextall), Tim Kerr being the most underappreciated star in hockey, Scott Mellanby becoming the hero of 13 year old girls everywhere, watching the Broad Street Bullies get old and decrepit, etc.

Funny, the Flyers were able, in sucession, to bring up and develop great goalie talent. Parent, Peters, Lindbergh, Hextall. Since Hexy, NOTHING. Now the Flyers trade for backup goalies who think they can be a starter. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Philadelphia has to invent a sport then. Whenever England plays sport and everywhere else starts to get better than us, we invent something else! Or play Sierra Leone, or Cambodia or something... Philly needs to invent a new game! Or just have one good player that can dominate a sport in the USA that isn't really played much there. Then you would get someone from Philadelphia winning at least!

You can find servicable cheesesteaks (I get rolls FedExed and make my own at home when I get the crave)

BUT there is no good strombolis (of any variety) ANYWHERE. No one knows a stromboli isn't a folded in half pizza.

This being said, I do get some kickass Mexican food here in North Mexico (and surprisingly good sushi places, too)... so it evens out

Then you should try what they call a cheesesteak in Arizona. Put peppers and mushrooms on it and some fake cheese. Yech! I love Philly, and although I only lived there briefly, (less than a year), the time I was there was a great time for sports. UPENN in the Final Four, Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals, Phillies were a year away from a World Series title and the Sixers were a good team. Heck, even the minor league hockey team that played at the Palestra was a good one. There was another D1 team which was pretty good then if my memory is correct, I think LaSalle?

they don't use the right meat (thinly chipped - not sliced - ribeye is best) and the rolls cannot be made properly here due to the elevation, the hard water, and lack of high humidity. I have a friend in Casa Grande that used to live across the street from me in PA. She used to bake her own kickass bread and hoagie rolls there and they just aren't the same here. I miss Wawa and Yuengling hard, but nothing else...

stromboli is smaller - burrito size and shape, and invented in the states. calzone is a pizza folded in half and I guess most are baked these days but they were fried in the old country. also, stromboli have sauce on the side whereas calzone have it on top or inside. cheesesteaks in philly suck unless you get whiz on them.

With a great cheesesteak, it's all about the rolls. They are best with Schuylkill River wuter for some reason (it's what I grew up on I guess) ISOPs (Inside Out pizza) is what most people call strombolis. Strombolis are rolled and pichned, not folded.

Stromboli is baked in a sheet size, anywhere from 15 x 12 on up, and is served sliced, as you said, with sauce on the side. Calzones are the smaller, burrito size and are served whole. Gotta have whiz, otherwise, its just a sandwich.

I had to dig out an old Chef's glossary, but here are the official definitions:

"Stromboli is an American invention from Philadelphia. It is a rectangular pizza base filled down the middle then sealed by drawing the long sides together, and baked".

"Calzone is a half-circle shaped, enclosed pizza. If you take a pizza base, cover HALF with your filling, then fold one side over the other. A Calzone is also baked".

"A Panzerotti is a traditional fried squares of dough. A miniature calzone if you will, or a "fried" ravioli".
