Oh, It's Good to be a Yankee Fan.

Well, as Joe Torre stated, "If you're constantly looking in your rear view mirror, you're bound to hit something in front of you." After yet another successful series against the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees climbed to within four and a half games of their Massachusetts foes and two and a half games in front of the Detroit Tigers. The dwelling didn't stop last night, as the Red Sox have just lost their opening game versus the Toronto Blue Jays, as the Yankees cruised past the Baltimore Orioles tonight (as Derek Jeter climbed to the fourth all time hits leader with 2,337 just in front of Bernie Williams).

Just three months ago, the men in pinstripes were 14.5 games down in the standings, the pain in my chest was a feeling of apprehensiveness that I have not felt since the 2004 American League Championship Series, and the feelings were mutually reciprocated throughout the Yankee fanbase.

Another bizarre event occured: the Red Sox nation had stormed back from the closet. As Jim Caple stated in a recent ESPN.com Page 2 article, "It seems to me Red Sox Nation only exists when the team is winning, like a country that only shows up on U.S. State Department radar when oil is discovered. Wherever Red Sox Nation is, I just wish Bush would invade it." Certainly, their third place finish from last year has been forgotten.

So with just two weeks to go in the season, it feels good to watch a game with a nice cup of hot Joba from Shelley Duncan Donuts. The Yankees are back, somewhere in this world exists a person who goes by the name of Carl Pavano, and the delicious smell of the post season is right around the corner. Mmmm, how good it feels.

If the Yankees win the division, I will applaud them, and they'll have something to talk about when the Sawx fans say "Hey, we swept you when we were down 3 games in 2004).

Isn't like most other fans, not just inherent in BoSox fans?

You win one series against the Yankees ever (granted it was the BEST defeat of the Yankees I've seen) and you pull that card out EVERY chance you get, but it's your ONLY card - you don't have ANYTHING to talk about otherwise: 26, Bucky, Boone, Babe, Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock, Sparky Lyle, A-Rod not becoming a Red Sock then becoming a Yankee, Johnny Damon...

The Red Sox are the Yankees little personal bitches save for one week in 2004

And if you fail to see that, you prove my point you myopic, selective memory joke of a fanbase.

No lead is big enough with Yankees in the AL East. Yankees just can't be counted out till it is over. Once they got their rotation in order except for Mussina they gained a lot of ground and it helped that Matsui and Abreu started hitting in the second half not to mention the MVP season of Alex Rodriguez.

Two weeks ago the Yankees were 7 games behind the Red Sox and now they have cut that lead in half to 3 and a half games.

I can't believe I'm rooting for the Yankees (to overtake the Red Sox and crush the spirit of their insufferable fans AND to beat the Orioles so the Rays can take 4th place) Oh well, it's not like the Yankees will get past the first round anyway...

This statement of support would hold more weight when your team is the one down 14.5 games. This Johnny-Come-lately sounds like a fair-weather fan to me. At least Manny still pulls for the perennial Rays to make it into 4th slot in the AL East.

Tampa might also finish over .400 for only their 5th time ever. Quite an accomplishment for such a useless organization.

I dont think I have ever heard the words, "It's good to be a Yankee fan," while the team was staring up at the Red Sox in the stadings. What a weird baseball season it has been.
