Oden = Duncan?

Since the 1985-86 draft lottery in which the New York Knicks picked Patrick Ewing just one team the 2003-04 Pistons has won an NBA championship without having a player who was picked in the top 2 of the NBA Lottery. (I’m including the titles won by the Rockets with Olajuwon who was actually picked first a year before, Isiah Thomas who was picked 2 nd in 1981, Magic the 1 st pick in 1979, and Jordan the 3 rd pick in 84, but you get the point). If the Celtics or Grizz fall to the 3 rd pick or worse in the draft the odds are not good that they will win an NBA championship for the foreseeable future. Since Jordan’s last title in 97-98 teams with either Shaq or Duncan have won 7 of the past 8 titles. Only by fortunate circumstances were the Spurs able to get Duncan.  They had lost David Robinson for the season the year before and limped to a 20-62 record the 3 rd worst in the league behind coincidentally the Grizz and the Celts and leapfrogged them to the 1 st pick.  They lost (tanked) 10 of their last 12 games that year including the last 7 in a row.  Unlike the NFL the NBA in an attempt to curb tanking has developed this lottery system. Unfortunately the beneficiaries have not been the worst teams but teams that through injuries or “late season slumps.”

With that said I would like to analyze what impact Greg Oden could have in his rookie season in the NBA.  Oden is often compared to Duncan or David Robinson because of his demeanor and defensive prowess. I analyzed all of the centers who were 1 st round picks in the last 50 or so years and came up with a list of comparables.  I gathered stats from Jazzy J’s College Basketball website for these players at age 19 for comparison. Here is the list comparing Pts, Reb, Blk per game.

Name               Pts       Reb      Blk

Greg Oden     15.7     9.6       3.3

Tim Duncan    19.1     12.3     3.75

Dw.Howard    12        10        1.7       NBA

M. Camby       10.2     6.4       3.6

A.Mourning    16.5     8.5       2.2

Shaq                24.1     14        5.2

D. Robinson    23.6     11.6     4

B. Daugherty  17.3     9.7       1.25

P. Ewing         12.7     7.5       3.2

Olajuwon        8.3       6.2       2.5

R. Sampson     14.9     11.2     4.6

M. Malone       18.8     14.6     1.5       ABA

Looking at the list the most comparable player is not Duncan or Robinson it is Alonzo Mourning who has been a 7-time All-Star.  Oden though is taller and a better shot blocker, but has a less developed offensive game than most on this list.  This list indicates that Oden may be somewhere between the Mourning/Ewing level and the Tim Duncan level, not too shabby.  But how many games improvement does that translate into for the team who gets him? Analyzing the same players and comparing their teams record in their rookie seasons to the year before we get this list:

Tim Duncan    +36

Dw.Howard    +15

M. Camby       +9

A.Mourning    +13

Shaq                +20

D. Robinson    +35

B. Daugherty  +2

P. Ewing         -1

Olajuwon        +19

R. Sampson     +15

M. Malone       -13

Its an average of almost 14 games although the numbers are squed with Robinson returning from injury in Duncan’s rookie year.  Obviously there are also many other factors in a team improving from year to year, injuries etc. But, it should be noted that in almost every case above the teams improved significantly. In the case of the Celtics a 10-15 game improvement would place them at or near the 8 th playoff spot in the East.

While I think Oden will be much better, players like Andrew Bogut picked 1st two years ago have struggled in their adjustment to the NBA. I think at this point that comparing Oden to Duncan is premature.

Oden could have been a Duncan-esque impact player if he had come up around the same time as Duncan. Unfortunatly, Oden came up in the period of time where kids are judged and overrated from the time they're 12 years old and will go to the NBA way too early. Duncan plays as he does because he got four years of fundamentals in college. Now college has no fundamentals, it's just a year of barn ball before payday. Basketball has changed dramatically since Duncan came on the scene and Oden's legacy will pay for it.

There is so much of an incentive to leave school early. Is the NBA rule helping or hurting these kids?

I think the thing people underestimate about Duncan is his intelligence. He is a guy that picked up basketball very late and is as fundamentally sound as if he was born dribbling. He has incredible patience and work ethic and I could go on Giving him Literary but Oden may not be as sharp in the old toolshed department (just guessing from Oden's offspring, Michael Finley)

That being said, I think Oden has better natural basketball instincts and will end up historically as a better defender than Duncan.

The comparisons aren't really fair because Duncan IS a big forward in an almost center's body. Oden is a center in a center's body. Who will end up with more rings? Oden will certainly get some if he gets a coach with ANY ability. (I think he could have stepped in for Yao and made Houston a Western Conf Finals team...)

there were some ommissions because i either couldnt get the data or the player was in high school. It's tough because it makes a difference when a guy has a january birthday vs. say August. Kinda like trying to decide when to send a child to school. So the data is not necessarily complete, just the best I could estimate. In Kandy-man's 1st NBA season he turned 23 for part of that season so i just counted back 4 years which puts him in mostly in high school for my purposes. His freshman year at Pacific he was 4/3.4/1.3.

I know, it was just a shot at a cheap laugh at the expense of a guy that can take more tasers than I can...

It is a complete crapshoot concerning draft pick projections in any sport. A guy can dominate in college and absolutely stink as a professional. Oden probably will be a decent pro player but any player with 1 year or less of college ball is somewhat a gamble.

That's the first intelligent statement you've made on this site. Maybe you're finally gettting how this works. Oden is too raw, 19 year old body but much less in basketball age. I don't see him starting right away regardless of where he ends up. As Mr. Briggs correctly states, he is a gamble and honestly should stay in school, he needs more experience against guys with his same talent level. In the NBA, he couldn't stay with Olowakandi.

In principle I agree, but I think you're wrong especially regarding some of the top players in the draft...

Oden may claim to be 19, but does anyone believe this...He looks like Bill Russell...now...

Think about the top high school talent that may not have won a championship (which mentioned earlier, hasn't really been done all that often), but certainly played well in the NBA (Kobe, LeBron, KG)...Not to mention that 2 of those 3 teams absolutely stunk when they got their new player...basketball is a team game and drafting one guy when you're close to the worst team in the league isn't going to take you to the finals...i don't care if you get jordan, kobe etc (look at Kobe now...we're doing the same thing!)...Oden would have come out last year had the rules not changed...that's pretty much a fact...

The most overused word describing any potential draft pick or rookie is "potential". Oden has the same problems most big men have at such a young age, lack of outside shot, bad feet (not physically, movement wise), not being able to control his body inside which leads to bad fouls. If I was a GM and needed an immediate fix, or was maybe one player away from contending, then I take Durant. If I'm on a five year rebuilding and can wait for someone to develop at his own pace, then I take Oden. And if I'm a team such as Minnesota or New York, who already has a big man, then I probably take neither, and draft Mike Conley Jr., because point guards make everyone else better.

You're right..its also often referred to as "Upside" If you're the GM or Minnesota or NY and you had the 1st pick (and NY doesn't), you mean to tell me you'd pass up durant or oden? I can see the 3rd pick, but we're talking about the 1st...

I'm a Knicks fan, so if I had the first pick I'd probably take Durant, but I'd have to think about it. I mean, its nice to have two good big men, but who's going to get them the ball? If I has the second pick and Durant went #1, I would not take Oden. Eddy Curry's got game, remember, he was a high schooler too, and had no business being in the NBA his first couple years. So I would go with Conley.

Don't worry about it, the Knicks don't have a lottery pick anyways...

I don't think you can pass up a talent like oden based on need...Is conely as much of an once in a generation PG as Oden is a once in a generation C/F?

I see your point, but I don't think you can pass up Oden, especially considering the reaction of fans, media etc (Not saying its fair or right, just the way it is)
