Joe Torre will officially not be coming back as the Yankees manager. The skipper turned down a 1 year $5 million contract, with performance incentives and a potential second year based on how well the Yankees performed in October. Deeming that to be the final insult, Torre decided to walk away. Tim Brown congratulates Torre for finally standing up to standing up to the Boss. Buster Olney reflects on the Torre reign.
Dan Patrick, apparently not finding the whole independent thing so appealing anymore, will join Sports Illustrated. Patrick will have his radio show syndicated on SI.com and will be joined on a regular basis by Peter King, Tom Verducci, and Rick Reilly. Patrick will also pen a weekly column for the magazine. No word yet on whether KO will be involved in addition.
Jimmy Kimmel has responded to his banning from the Monday Night Football booth in an interview with Sports Illustrated. A producer for the show called his appearance classless, though Kimmel was never asked to leave. Kimmel made numerous hot-button comments. The best was "I'd also like to welcome Joe Theismann, watching from his living room with steam coming from his ears."
Chelsea's all-world striker Didier Drogba has stated his desire to leave Stamford Bridge. "We are left with a feeling of incompleteness and impotence, the striker told France Football Magazine. He has listed A.C. Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Real Madrid as the only clubs he will consider. No word on how this will affect his budding rap career.
Steve McClaren is on the hotseat, after the 2-1 defeat away at Russia has crippled England's chances for qualification for 2008. Brian Barwick gave McClaren the "dreaded vote of confidence." The FA are likely to target Mourinho as a replacement, though he wants his next job to be at club level. Though they may fancy the cut of Martin O'Neill 's jib as well. Somewhere in Manchester, a red-faced Sven is maniacally laughing.
