  • Yogi Berra is fired as Yankees' manager after his club loses the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3.

  • The Oakland A's clinch their 3rd straight World Series title. Joe Rudi hits the deciding shot off of Dodgers reliever Mike Marshall.

  • The Pittsburgh Pirates clinch the World Series title, propelled by Willie Stargell's 3 series home runs. Stargell is named World Series MVP.

  • Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Robin Yount records his 2nd 4-hit game of the World Series. Yount becomes the first player to ever record 2 4-hit games in one World Series.

  • David Ortiz keeps the Red Sox hopes alive in Game 4 of the ALCS. Down 3 games to none against the New York Yankees, Ortiz drives in 4 runs, including a 2-run walk-off homer in the 12th. Dave Roberts pinch-ran in the ninth and contributed one of the most famous stolen bases in MLB history, and eventually scored on Bill Mueller's single off of Mariano Rivera to force extra innings.

  • St. Louis' Albert Pujols hits a 3-run HR off Brad Lidge with 2 outs in the 9th inning to cap a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros.
