This Saturday is Sweetest Day, as I'm sure nobody knew, since it's a ridiculous holiday. But for Red Sox fans, Oct 20 really is the sweetest day of all. It was Oct 20 three years ago that the Red Sox polished off the greatest post season comeback in baseball history, beating the Yankees 13-5 in Yankee Stadium. Baseball fans everywhere appreciated that comeback, everyone was blown away, and nobody predicted it. But for us, it was more than just an A.L. pennant, it was the first beautiful chapter of a perfect ending to an 86 year novel. Not only did The Curse end, it ended in the most perfect way that it possibly could. The Sox beat the Yankees in historic fashion. What could be better? In Yankee Stadium. Are you kidding? After winning that series, the World Series felt like a foregone conclusion.
So if you're a Red Sox fan, don't take Sweetest Day lightly. It may have been conceived as a "Hallmark Holiday", but to us, it really is the most appropriate way to describe this day.
