Obnoxious Fans

by Behbigben15

If I were to give an award to an NFL team's fan base, I would have to give it to the fans of the New England Patriots after what I saw on Sunday.

It was late in the game on Sunday in New England, with the Patriots beating the New York Jets 17-10, the Pats were in the red zone and threatening to score, when referee Jeremy Boger had to temporarily suspend play, due to fans throwing snowballs onto the field. There were fans along the end zone throwing snowballs, and many of them were hitting the back judge. That tells me that they didn't like the officials calls, and I think they were being selfish. That's just my opinion, (correct me if I'm wrong) here's a team that is undefeated, and winning by 7 points with 3 minutes remaining still throwing for the end zone, and they are going to complain about the officials calls?? I don't think the Pats were running up the score like many others think they do, especially since they were only winning by 7, but I just don't like what the fans were doing.

I hate when people go to games, and think they can do whatever the hell they want, just because they paid the money. I don't mind people heckling/yelling at players, but when you do something to affect the play on the field?! That's just plain ignorant, and I really don't understand it.

Since I just saw the NFL Replay version of Sunday's games, I may have gotten some of the details wrong, and I am sorry if I did, the point of me writing this article is to express my opinion on fans at Football games. I love going to NFL games, but I would never risk going to jail just so I could get 10 seconds of TV, especially when most of the times the network doesn't show a fan getting escorted out, or running onto the field.

NOTE: THIS ARTICLE WASN'T WRITTEN TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PATRIOTS, JUST FANS IN GENERAL. SO, DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY, YES I'M TALKING TO ALL 45837257486754 PATRIOTS FANS.

Obnoxious fans aren't isolated in New England by any means. But I was a bit embarassed as a Pats fan when I saw the snowballs falling on the field. From what I gathered, the snowballs were being thrown AT THE JETS, which makes it even worse, in my mind. 95% of the time, the most obnoxious ones that ruin the game for everyone are hammered.

Meg's right. It's always the drunken idiots that ruin the fun. It doesn't matter if they are Patriot fans, Colt fans, Bears fans, White Sox fans, Yankee fans, Cub fans, it doesn't matter. Drinking makes people do stupid stuff

Rule of 3s? Why is it that it seems you can't sit at a sporting event without someone

intoxicated within three seats of you? I remember being at Fenway for a Sox-Yankees

game with my daughter, and listen to 1) continuous cursing and 2) some guy yelling 'hit 'em in the head' every pitch Pedro Martinez threw. The gendarmes finally tossed the guys in the 8th inning. Guess the guys just migrated to Foxboro.

There are obnoxious fans for every team in professional and collegiate sports, unfortunately... even the teams I root for. But there are fans of some teams more than others. Just ask cocky Dallas Cowboys fans who think they're God's gift to sports ("America's team" my f'en ass, they wish). Or Bostonians who have had shown unjustified venom toward New Yorkers. Guess what, the feeling's now mutual.

Why because ex-Red Sox Wade Boggs rode an NYPD horse after winning the World Series? What does that have to do with Boston justifying their venom towards New York? This goes beyond sports though.

If I took the 1,000 worst fans supporting every team, I could make every team's fan base look pretty bad. And about the logo dancing, cry me a river. Do you think if someone danced on the Pats logo, they'd make a big fuss over it? No, they'd be more mad at losing the game than what happened after they lost.

I was at the game, and we removed several fans for throwing snowballs from the 200 level to the 100 level. I was more pissed at the indiscriminate throwing of snowballs by fans at other fans in front of them (very few fans had the balls to throw snowballs at people behind them), because you should be able to go to a game and not have to worry about balls of ice hitting you in the head.

That being said, to isolate this type of behavior to Patriots fans is bullshit. I watched highlights of the Cleveland/Buffalo game and saw snowballs being thrown at players and refs.

I also think it's bullshit that you generalize that all Patriot fans are obnoxious because some Patriot fans threw snowballs. Gillette can only hold 70,000 people. There are a few more Pats fans than that. And most of the crowd did not participate in the chucking of snowballs onto the field. You get a few drunk fans with their seats covered in snow, what do you expect?

A big problem at Gillette was that we were EXTREMELY understaffed because of the weather that morning. For this game, we would normally deploy 1,300 people, but we only had 220. Had there been more of us, the snow throwing may have been curtailed much earlier. Nevertheless, I think we did a fantastic job putting on that event on time and with no injuries to any fans.

And to be fair to the fans at the game, snowball throwing decreased dramatically once they announced over the PA that it would result in a stoppage of play. When play was stopped, it was thanks to one snowball aimed at an official.

But if you want to claim that Pats fans are the most obnoxious because one guy in section 120 (who just might lose his season tickets when we review the security tapes) threw a snowball, be my guest. I deal with a lot of obnoxious fans at Gillette, but I also deal with a lot who aren't obnoxious.

I do know that there are many obnoxious fans for every single pro sports team, and I really wish fans would just sit the fack down, and watch the game. I think the worst incident involving fans at a pro sports game would be the Pacers/Pistons game where Ron Artest went into the stands, stuff like that is just ignorant, and it was deffinitely the fans fault. I also remember when I think it was the Bills/Browns game a few years ago where fans threw beer bottles on the field, and the officials had to run to the locker room, and get hit with those things. That just pisses me off.

Hey Manny, I oughta give you a smack to the head for your not so nice shot at the Big Apple! Kiss my New York ass! :P ...and Napoleon, I wasn't just referring to sports in my comments earlier tonight. Seriously, Bostonians actually do have a problem with New Yorkers in real life for some blessed reason. And another thing, Derek Jeter overrated? You're kidding, right? How many rings does he have on his fingers? Gold Gloves? Top 25 in hitting? Number of times he's come through with the clutch playoff play to help the Yankees win a division title, a playoff series or even the World Series? Check the video archives dating back to 1996. Get back to me on that and tell me he's still overrated.

I won't deny that Derek Jeter is a very good player (you don't know how difficult it was to type that), but I still say he's overrated. Gold Gloves are little more than popularity contests, as was proven when Troy Tulowitzki didn't win one this year. And as for his "clutch" play, how clutch has he been the last few years? He wasn't even as clutch as A-Rod this last year. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are the epitome of clutch these days.
