Jason Kendall started the scoring in the 3rd as he lined a single to center, driving in Travis Buck, but the lead would not last long. In the bottom of the 3rd, Haren would walk Matthews and give up a double to Orlando Cabrera to set up Vlad's sacrifice fly that drove in Matthews.
The A's had a chance to score in the fifth with Mark Ellis at third, but Scutaro hit to Orlando Cabrera who threw Ellis out at the plate. They also had a chance in the 7th with runners on the corners and 2 outs, but Scutaro struck out to end the inning.
The Angels on the other hand, took advantage of another of Scutaro's problems tonight, as Garret Anderson doubled and scored as the shortstop threw the ball past Nick Swisher at 1b on a single by Kotchman.
On the whole, it was not a good night for Scutaro who went 0-3 with a strike out and left 4 men on base.
The Athletics did get some offense from Mike Piazza and Erik Chavez in the form of doubles, but they didn't help the score. The Angels also got a couple of doubles from Cabrera, but they did not factor into the scoring.
The teams finish their first series of the season Sunday at 12:35 PT as Joe Blanton (0-0 6.0) takes on Kelvim Escobar (1-0 3.38)
