OK, OK, Joe Torre is a Hall of Famer, BUT... Here's the REAL Question I Want Answered!

17
Vote

by Stan E. Miles

OK, Joe Torre is going into the Hall of Fame eventually (after he takes his next managerial job for $4mil/year). He has the most successful combination of player/manager career out of every player/manager so far. He's a lock! 2,000 hits and 2,000 wins is impressive. Put him in already!

Here's the REAL question I want answered:

Is George Steinbrenner going into the Hall of Fame some day?

"You're a Hall of Famer." "No, YOU are a Hall of Famer." "No, you are..." "No, YOU are!"
"You're a Hall of Famer." "No, YOU are a Hall of Famer." "No, you are..." "No, YOU are!"

Owners and other contributors to the game are certainly eligible for induction under the Executive/Pioneer category. George Steinbrenner has shaped the game as much or more than any owner since Charles O. Finley. Both for good and bad - and many times just for the headlines - but he has had an astounding impact on the game nonetheless.

How many other baseball owners can you even name from the last 34 years? Several perhaps? A bunch if you're into baseball, but most "regular" people (non-ArmchairGMites/sports dorks) would struggle to name but a few. EVERYBODY with at least a faint pulse can name George!

Sure King George III has his detractors, his foibles, his criminal past (illegal campaign contributions), the lifetime ban he agreed to for trying to dredge dirt on Dave Winfield with the help of extortioning gamblers that was lifted after merely two plus years (the same kind of lifetime ban that Pete Rose agreed to that was never lifted).

He fired managers faster than he changed underwear and drove the free agent salary scale through the roof... He is hated by many owners and by even more of his own employees. Sure, he's already a Hall of Fame A$$hole, but you can't deny his results as owner.

Plus the guy makes for great copy! How many Pulitzers has he spawned?

He also remade MLB's Global Flagship Franchise, the New York Yankees back into a powerhouse franchise (TWICE) albeit with the help of other people (whom HE hired). He brought in Hall of Fame player after Hall of Fame player and established the Professionalism that is synonymous with Pinstripes. He created a megacable television network around his team. He upgraded old Yankee stadium in the 70's and recently brokered a deal to build a brand new, beyond state of the art, eleventy quijillion dollar Yankee Stadium.

Little known fact about The Boss: He lurks on ArmchairGM and gives many thumbs up - Not as many as Dr. Commento, but...
Little known fact about The Boss: He lurks on ArmchairGM and gives many thumbs up - Not as many as Dr. Commento, but...

He has been mocked by everyone, likened to Darth Vader, caricatured endlessly, parodied by C. Monty Burns in the Simpsons. Dude has an imdb.com page! He's been in numerous movies, he was in Lite Beer commercials in the 70's (when commercials were COMMERCIALS!) and Visa commercials in the Naughty Aughties (that's the decade we're in for the Stiles-impaired). He even hosted an episode of SNL! Hell, he enabled ESPN to make a star out of Oliver Platt!

I can't imagine what my entire life of Baseball fanhood (he bought the Yankees about 3 weeks before I was concieved in 1973) would be without having the guy there to hate. And I don't even really hate him, he's just such an easy target!

I can't think of MLB without the irrefutable prick. I can't look at Jason Alexander without thinking of the bastard. I can't visit Tampa without hearing about the son of a bitch. I probably wouldn't even hate the Yankees so much if it wasn't for the emephing seeyesser!!!

So I've been thinking about it and I'm still not sure! I really do think he is worthy of the Hall, but like Charlie-O (who did some good Hall-worthy things of his own) I think he has so much negative baggage and so many enemies that it won't ever happen...

What do YOU think?

Is George Steinbrenner a Hall of Famer?

(there's really no wrong answer)

George Steinbrenner may be voted into the Hall of Fame someday but I would never vote for him myself but can see he did make a difference for Yankees while he has been there. One thing that may keep him from making the Hall of Fame were his hirings and firings of Billy Martin which didn't show much professionalism on his part and made him appear to be a reactionary who could change his mind on a whim.

I gotta agree with you, Niteowl. If I had to vote, I would never vote for Steinbrenner. He doesn't make many great decisions. He has all the money in the world, and he just buys players who he thinks are good. It like fantasy baseball, except you get to make all the picks you want. He doesn't hire many young players, and doesn't, or hasn't, relied on many young players besides this year. Getting guys like Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, Bobby Abreu, Roger Clemens, etc. for a lot more than they are worth, and not winning anything is just ridiculous. It's just like a mom and a kid crying for everything he wants at a toy store. If he wants everything, the mom is just gonna buy everything for him. That's what he does, except it's for himself.

he has "all the money in the world" because he turned the Yankees into a money printing organization. He is pretty responsible for a lot of scrubs raking dough - and not just players!

I don't like him, but I'd vote for him if I had a vote. He's shaped the game dramatically, whether you like the way he has shaped it or not. He is a major figure in the history of the MLB.

I don't see how he has improved the game in any way. He's definitely had an impact on baseball, and his team has had years of success, but it's safe to say that the more hands on he is, the weaker his teams become. When he hires good people to do their jobs, they do well. When his baseball people keep talking about Ken Phelps' bat, he has suffered. Then again, Charlie Comiskey is in the Hall, and he was a miserly bastard. Tom Yawkey is in the Hall, and he was a racist bastard. Maybe George does belong in Cooperstown, in the bastard wing.

Finley is his measuring stick into the bastard wing. I don't think any other owner during his reign of terror has done nearly as much as George has... Not even close. Isn't that the primary measuring stick for HoFers?

Can we have a special exhibit for his TV wars in Tampa? And Larry David HAS to do George's induction speech. With a camera behind his shoulder, of course.

It just kinda hit me the other day... I did a web search before I wrote this - to make sure I wasn't "stealing" the idea. I figured there would be tons of stuff on it and I found ONE article written in 2004. Astounding. I have to think he'll never make it or there would be people stumping for him...

With the changes to the Veterans Committee structure and voting process his chances are alot better now than they would have been otherwise. Owners, executives, even umpires generally get screwed over, but that likely will change.

If Charles Comiskey can underpay his players to the point they took gambling money, and still make it into the HOF, I think Steinbrenner can make it too.

Sorry, Rawbeezeitz. I didn't read all the comments before I, myself, commented. Wasn't trying to steal your thunder there.
