Number One Pick

With the NFL season close to kick off and the pointless preseason winding down, a lot of holdouts are starting to end. Brady Quinn signed, Larry Johnson signed, Samuel has shown up for Patriots camp, but what about the Oakland Raiders? Their quarterback, of the future, has yet to ink a deal. Who gets blamed for this? Some so called experts say it's the Oakland Raiders. I say it's a spoiled rookie who thinks he is better than he really is. $28 mil in guarantees for a guy that has never played in the NFL, thats a lot of money. It is my opinion that rookies shouldn't be allowed to hold out, I say sign a one year deal, if your good and you prove that you can make it in the NFL then sign a real deal, but enough of this crap. Okay, so the Raiders sign Russell to a 5 year deal worth 33 mil, like he wants, and what if he sucks? Well the answer is Raiders fans have 5 more miserable years because Russell ate up most of the cap room. Look at the Detroit Lions when they picked star quarterback Joey Harrington to turn their misfortune around. And they are still paying for it, he was awful. The only thing that it got them was a bad team.

Don't get me wrong I am not against players signing big contracts, if they deserve it. I just think that they should have to earn it first.

The Raiders are the only team in recent memory unable to sign the No.1 draft pick. Houston drafted Mario Williams over Reggie Bush because they were able to sign him before the draft. I do not blame Russell for holding out as much as the Raiders for not shelling out for what they already knew he would cost.

I agree on the no hold out clause for rookies. Set the guaranteed money at levels associated with your picks ($xxx for Pick 1 / $xxx for Picks 2-5 / $xxx for Picks 6-20 and so on).

I agree. There should be set contracts for rookies, like in the NBA. Then arbitration like in baseball (I don't know how the NBA does it after the set money).

This is the biggest load of bull shit ever...stop, just stop...

Look...the NFLPA is already pounding most of the players in the backside with their crappy CBA, why do some of you insist on saying rookies need to sign for less money

What if he sucks, or gets hurt or something...

What if you did...would your boss, during the interview, say "Well, you might be terrible at this or be a douchebag...so would you mind taking 10,000 less?"

What...no

Don't blame russell for trying to get the most money he can...

This goes back to the old saying...something is worth only as much as someone is willing to pay for it. The Raiders knew full well from the start what it would take to sign Russell, as it was discussed prior to them drafting him. They have no one to blame but themselves for their inability to get him into camp.

The players dont even really have a say in anything anymore, they basically sign there lives over to those damm agents and assume everything is going to be ok! I hate agents, they run the sports world!

I can see both sides to the argument but unfortunately the status of being the #1 pick warrants huge money, whether or not you've done anything. Russell needs to get into camp soon or Oakland will turn on him, even if it is his agents/the organizations fault.

IT'S ALL READY TOO LATE FOR "MR."RUSSELL: IMAGINE YOUR A VET. ON THE TEAM AND NOW HE SHOWS UP IN THE LOCKER ROOM. IMAGINE YOUR A ROOKIE AND HE SHOWS UP IN THE LOCKER ROOM. IMAGINE YOUR A COACH. IMAGINE YOUR A FAN AND HE NOW SHOWS UP AT A GAME IN OR OUT OF UNIFORM.

FOOTBALL IS SPELLED "EMOTION" - WHAT EMOTION WILL THIS HOLDOUT--BRING OUT, IN THESE GROUPS. FURTHER: IMAGINE YOUR IN AN ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY; THE BALL BOY; THE EQUIPMENT MANAGER; A CHEERLEADER; GROUNDS CREW; STADIUM ANNOUNCER; ETC.; ETC.. THE EMOTION IS DISAPPOINTMENT OR WORSE. TEAMS, GOOD TEAMS ARE BUILT ON THE EMOTION OF PASSION! THAT IS, IN THE CASE OF FOOTBALL, A STRONG,INTENSE EMOTION OF CAMARADERIE FOR YOUR TEAMMATES, FOR YOUR COACHES,YOUR TEAM OWNER, FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SEE YOU DO WELL,-WILL THEY? WILL THEY WANT TO SEE YOU DO WELL? OR WILL THEY SAY (FEEL)- JUST STAY OUT. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR. OR BETTER YET HOLD NEXT YEAR TOO. THAT'S RIGHT SIT OUT NEXT YEAR, THAT WAY YOU CAN KISS 2 YEARS GOOD-BY, OF YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU COULD HAVE BEEN LIVING LIKE MAN IN LOVE WITH HIS LIFE - THAN LIKE A COLLEGE BOY AFRAID TO FIND OUR IF HE IS AS GOOD AS SO MANY ARE TELLING HIM HE IS. YEAH, MAYBE THAT'S IT- YOUR AFRAID, YOUR STILL JUST A BOY. GO BACK TO SCHOOL -SCHOOL "BOY"! WE HAD SO MUCH EXCITEMENT ABOUT YOU . NOW THE BEST EMOTION I CAN MUSTER IS CRESTFALLEN. GO BACK TO SCHOOL...
