Number 24, Kobe Bryant

14

by user Madproof9

It was announced Wednesday that Kobe Bryant will be changing his uniform number next year, from his current #8, to #24. Kobe wearing #24 will be like if Wayne Gretzky decided midway through his career that he wanted to be #14. It's just not right. Why didn't Kobe choose #24 when he entered the League? I'm not 100% sure if another player had it or not at that time Kobe entered the League, but that's irrelevant, because another player, Jim Jackson, currently wears the number, and will have to give it up for Kobe anyway. A number is a player. Wayne Gretzky IS #99, Michael Jordan IS #23 (sorry LeBron, I think you need a new number), Mickey Mantle IS #7. To think of these players as anything else is ridiculous, and to think of Kobe as anything but #8 is also ridiculous.

So why the sudden change for Kobe? How come after 10 years, he suddenly decides #24 is the way to go? The same reason the rest of the NBA has other jerseys. Why do you think teams have been wearing third jerseys, Sunday jerseys, alternate Sunday jerseys, throwback jerseys, semi-throwback jerseys, jersey's from when the team was in another city, jerseys from...Where ever they are from? Money is the only reason. Every new jersey is profit. A fan sees the new jersey, and instantly wants to be cool, and to have that jersey. Every new jersey that is available, there will be fans to purchase it.

Fan #1 - "The Laker's colors aren't even baby blue and white!"
Fan #2 - "Who cares, I gotta get the new jersey, it's only $75!"

The Los Angeles Lakers have worn essentially the same home and road jersey's since Kobe entered the league 10 seasons ago. A few minor changes here and there, but if you put two fans side by side, one with a 10-year-old jersey, and one with a one-year-old jersey, most people could not tell the difference. The Lakers jerseys are classic, and they can't be changed without creating an uproar. So what do the Lakers and Kobe do to make more money from jersey sales? Change Kobe's number. Now you aren't cool unless you have the new #24 Kobe jersey. Every fan of Kobe now feels obligated to go buy another jersey, to give the League more profits from it's sale. If they don't have the #24 jersey, they aren't a real fan.

The idea is stupid, and the players and the League are greedy. Fans support the athletes enough without having to buy a new jersey every night, just because a team decides to wear their alternate-third-Sunday-of-an-odd-month-when-it's-raining-outside jersey. Stop exploiting your fans for a few extra dollars.

I can't wait to get all the "Anonymous Fanatics" yelling at me about how #24 is sentimental to Kobe because he wore it in High School... blah blah blah, he acutally wore #33 for most of high school, and only #24 for one year, so don't yell at me for that.

This is pretty unprecedented. I can't remember the last time a superstar player in any sport changed his number without switching teams. Obviously, Jordan was #45 for a brief time, but we all know the circumstances there, and it wasn't long before he went back to 23. But for Kobe... this is really strange, I gotta admit. Is it about the money and jersey sales, like the author suggests? I hope not, but I can't think of any other reason.

Since I'm not anonymous, he may have chosen 33 initially but it was retired in Lakers purple and gold....some Kareem guy.

And actually he began high school wearing #24, and changed to #33 later, his senior in 1996 when his team took home state. Check http://sport...y?id=2421874 as a source.

With all this said, I still think there's a money issue here.....so assuming Kobe's career maintains it's current level, and his jersey is retired, will the front say 8 and the back 24?

He's making our uniform project incrementally more difficult, too. Now we have to add a year line to the uniform number 8 page.

Bryant claims it is because that is the number he wore in high school. Yea, right. This is just another example of Kobe trying to be someone he’s not: Michael Jordan (who, of course, switched from 23 to 45 upon his return). For Jordan, a number change was mainly a tribute to his father. But for Bryant, it is simply a way to get his name in the papers again, and to sell another boatload of jerseys. More importantly, it also shows us that in the midst of the NBA playoffs, Kobe is thinking of important matters, such as which number would look more aesthetically pleasing on him. Give me a break, Kobe. When will you learn? Anyway, I am hereby starting a boycott of all LA Laker Kobe Bryant jerseys. Whose with me? Join the boycott at www.thesportsfan.tv

I like the Boycott... he might have worn 24 for part of high school, but EVERY picture that I have seen with him from high school is when he is #33. Why would he change from #24 to #33, if he likes #24 enough to rep it in the NBA?

I agree with you Xtinct, he probably would have taken 33, but Kareem already had it, which is understandable. But why wouldn't he take #24 right away then? Did someone else have it when Kobe joined the Lakers? (I couldn't find a 1996 roster, so I'm not sure if they did or not). Like I said in the article though, someone has it now anyway, it's not like the number just randomly opened up. Maybe they will take the average of the two numbers, and retire #16 as Kobe's.

Em3, instead of throwing out random opinions I will paste the following from the espn article:

In order for a player to change jersey numbers at will, he either has to change teams or have the team inform the league of the decision more than six months in advance.

This is to say that Kobe isn't thinking about his jersey now...in fact it was thought about 6 months ago....if you personally don't like Kobe just say it....don't try to twist a story for your justification of not liking him. So give me a break EM, don't state opinions based on pure emotion, they tend to be real flimsy.

Madproof9, I'm not sure if 24 was available his rookie year...that's a good question.

Anonymous Fanatic, he changed to 33 because it's the number his father wore. All this is in the same article I quoted above....

According to lakerstats.com, George McCloud wore #24 during the 1996-97 season.

My opinion is if he wants to change, so be it I just want another championship in Los Angeles, and Kobe is a great basketball player he has learned the values of leadership and team involvement that to his change of person we came a long way in the play off people did not think we would make it but we did, so give him some love and respect.
