Now or Never for the Eagles?

The following article is a spinoff from the article, Questions Regarding the Top 10 NFL Stories. This article is a solely concentrated on the Philadelphia Eagles as it is set to appear in my Philadelphia-based school's newspaper. A special thanks to JuTMSY4 for helping me edit the article.

The Philadelphia Eagles, one year removed from the Terrell Owens debacle, went into the season with expectations to bounce back. The Eagles got off to a hot start with a 4-1 record. Things took a turn for the worst when they went 1-3 the next four games, topped by a freakish injury to Donovan McNabb during a week 11 game against the Tennessee Titans. Just when all hope was lost, backup quarterback Jeff Garcia stepped up and led the team to a 10-6 record winning the NFC East. With Garcia gone and clean slate for the 2007 Philadelphia Eagles, will this season be one for the ages? Let’s take a look at the top five questions concerning the midnight green and silver this season.

5. Will the defense show a significant improvement from the past two seasons?

The 2006 Eagles defense was ranked 15th in the league. While not bad, the defense could certainly use improvement from last year. In order to improve this, the Eagles made a few off-season moves, most notably acquiring LB Takeo Spikes from Buffalo. Spikes, coming off Achilles heel injury two years ago and a quad injury last year, is a question mark just as the rest of the line-backing corps. LB Jeremiah Trotter, age 30, is now practically playing without cartilage in his knees, and strong-side linebacker, Chris Gocong, is an inexperienced young defensive tackle turned linebacker.

With a 4-3 defense that loves to blitz, the bigger issue the Eagles have is the defensive line. The team was ranked 26th in rushing yards allowed last season. The ACL injury that kept DE Jevon Kearse out for most of the season, is a definitely a contributing factor, however the rest of the guys, namely fellow DE Darren Howard and the departed DT Darwin Walker, failed to step up as well. This year, the Eagles are counting on sophomore DT Brodrick Bunkley to help bring pressure on opposing quarterbacks and running-backs. Bunkley was the Eagles’ first round draft pick last year, but due to a camp hold-out, Bunkley never became comfortable with the Eagles’ system. With a year of experience on the field and at training camp, look for Bunkley to become an important part of the Eagles’ defense this season.

Another issue with the defense is depth in the secondary. In the off-season, the Eagles lost SS Michael Lewis and CB Roderick Hood to free agency. Sean Considine will take Lewis’ spot this season and has shown that he can play the position well. FS Brian Dawkins is the heart of the Eagles defense but is aging at 33 years old. Should his current Achilles heel injury prove to be a problem, the only guy to back him up is 5th round pick, C.J. Gaddis out of Clemson. As far as the cornerbacks go, after Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown, there isn’t much depth. CB William James has shown that he maybe able to start this season, but he is not quick enough to keep up with better receivers.

4. Can McNabb stay healthy this season?

After suffering two injuries the past two seasons, QB Donovan McNabb has become unreliable. So much so that it provoked the Eagles organization to draft quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick this past draft. McNabb is no doubt the face of the franchise and the Eagles will need him to stay healthy if they want to compete for the championship this season.

Not only does McNabb have to stay healthy, but he must also be more consistent. In the first five games last season, McNabb threw 11 touchdown passes while throwing only one interception posting a quarterback rating of 107.78. In the next five games, McNabb threw 7 touchdown passes while throwing five interceptions posting a quarterback rating of 76.32. McNabb cannot be this inconsistent if he wants to bring a championship to Philadelphia. At times McNabb can be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league; at other times he looks like a backup trying to become familiar with the system.

3. Who is the #1 option at receiver?

One of the biggest losses for the Eagles in the off-season was #1 option WR Donte’ Stallworth. With Stallworth gone, McNabb will have to find a new #1 option. WR Todd Pinkston, who was a key part of the team when the Eagles made the NFC Championship game three years in a row, is now with the Washington Redskins. Many have big hopes for third-year WR Reggie Brown. He has shown great improvement over the past couple of years; last season he led the team with 816 receiving yards and 8 touchdown catches. He will most likely be the favorite target however, do not count out sleeper WR Hank Baskett. Now in his sophomore year, Baskett did not put up big numbers last season, (464 yards, 2 touchdowns) but he has made some incredible plays at times and was a big part of the reason why the Eagles won games last season against the Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Falcons.

TE L.J. Smith was also a favorite to help McNabb out this season but due to multiple injuries, including the most recent aggravated sports hernia he suffered during camp, in which he had surgery for earlier in the off-season, he will not likely be available for most of the season. With his timetable unknown, backups Matt Schoebel and rookie Brent Celek will have to pick up the slack. A side note to the receiving team, head coach Andy Reid loves to run the screen, so RB Brian Westbrook may get a lot of receiving yards as well.

2. What will be the key contributing factor to the Eagles offense?

Last season, RB Brian Westbrook finally broke 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career due to head coach Andy Reid’s deferral of play calling to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and their willingness to let Westbrook rush the ball far more often than he had in the past (240 attempts in 2006, 156 attempts in 2005). What does this mean to the Eagle’s offense in 2007? Look for Westbrook to play the biggest role in the offense this year, not McNabb.

Westbrook has become a reliable back that can run the ball through holes in the line and around the line, catch the ball, and block. This, along with one of the league’s best offensive lines, will result in Westbrook to post up big numbers this season at the prime of his career. Reid allowing Westbrook to run the ball more often will also help McNabb’s durability as he will not have to take as many hits as in the past. Defenses will also be confused by the improved running game when concentrating their efforts on McNabb.

1. How will the Eagles fare this season?

Perhaps the most important question regarding the Philadelphia Eagles is obvious; how will they do? They have both the schedule and weapons to be great. For the first time in McNabb’s career, the Eagles have a well balanced attack with a great passing game, running game, defense, and most importantly, experience. Key games against the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and New Orleans Saints will show everyone how serious the Eagles are this season.

With McNabb at the age of 31 in November, it is widely accepted that he only has a few years left in him. A Vince Lombardi Trophy for the city is well overdue after failed attempts in late 70’s and early 80’s, late 80’s and early 90’s, and throughout the new decade. One has to wonder whether this season is now or never for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sports Moment of the Week (Aug 6 - 12)

Barry Bonds hit his 756th career homerun against the Washington Nationals, breaking the most hallowed record in all of sports previously held by Hank Aaron.

For those of you who don't know, William James is a former starter for the Giants...you might have known him as Will Peterson

What's interesting about the eagles offensive philosophy is that it doesn't make sense. Consider a few facts:

In 2003, when the eagles lost to the Panthers in the NFC championship game they lost, in large part to, not letting duce staley run the ball...they have essentially refused to run since (until last season)

In 2004, they acquired their only 1000 yard receiver, Terrible Owens. It does seem odd however, that a team likes the eagles, one that many people consider to be pass happy, has had only one 1000 yard receiver (for 1.5 seasons)...and yet their offense has been incredibly productive for the last 6 years or so...

Andy Reid, as of mid-2006, does not directly call the offensive plays...sicne then, not only has the eagles offense been more balanced (and less QB reliant) but the defense has performed better, in part, because they were on the field less...

Yea this year, if injuries aren't a concern, it might just MIGHT be their year. It makes me very nervous quite frankly.

I talked about this with my dad...every year it seems like, we're just one piece away from a ridiculous team...in 2004, it practically all fell into place and then owens broke his leg (against those same dallas bastards!)...but this year, they might have their best team overall...the thing is, there is a huge (and i mean huge) question mark at each of their major spots...if bunkley plays well, if they can run the ball, if McNabb stays healthy, if mcnabb can recover from his injury, if Gocong can adjust, if spikes returns to form, if trotter can walk, if the line can stay healthy (for that matter, the team)if Dorenbos can snap consistantly (he hasn't)... if all these things go the right way, they're a real good team...then again, you can usually apply that to most NFL teams...

I think this is the last year for the Eagles. They hvae gotton a lot of milliage out of basically the same team. McNabb is on the ropes right now and quietly but surely they are pushing for a change around him.

They have? Offensively, only McNabb, Runyan and Thomas have been constants...all of the receivers are either young or named Kevin Curtis and Westbrook is the rip old age of 27 (with a young tony hunt behind him)..not to mention the line is actually already taken care of, with Justice and Jean-Gilles set to replace the above names...

Defensively, Trotter and Dawkins are aging...and they will need to be replaced, but those corners, while tenured, are only about 26 and 28 respectively...In fact, a few years ago when both Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent left there were huge questions about the secondary...the following year Dawkins, Brown and Lewis went to the probowl...

They've actually rebuilt the team slowly and effectively...

The recieving core does not impress me, nor has it ever impressed me on any Eagles squad of the last decade. I just think that if McNabb has a bad year (anything less than a Super Bowl) that the heat will be on him hardcore and it may be hard to keep him in place. Once he leaves THIS Eagles team is gone and it becomes the Kolb era or who ever else and they are going in a different direction

Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent were the starters at CB. Vincent was a Pro Bowler. So, yes the club had estalbish, legit guys at the position.

it seems as though that you are complaining that Kolb was the first selection the Eagles made. The Eagles went with what they though was the best player available at the time. People forget, but the Eagles did have several defensive players rated highly, but all were gone by the time the Eagles was up to select int eh first round. hence, the team traded down, gained a couple of extra picks, and then picked the best players that were available.

The Eagles do not need help at reciever - they are surprisingly pretty well stack at that position. The Eagles did draft a LB in the 3rd round, Stewart Bradley. A safety came along in the 4th round.

What you wanted the Eagles to do was to draft in areas where you preceive them to be weak, instead of going after the best available player. To do what you wanted them to do is a clear recipe for disaster. Instead, the club picked what they thought were the best players available.

Couldn't have said it better chris... Eagles philosophy in the draft is to also build from within...meaning they draft a ton of lineman...

I think the deciding factor will be Westbrook, injuries aside. He will be crutial to the team and that's why I think the Eagles have a better shot at the championship than they have ever had.

It is neither now nor never. The Eagles are stack to win this year, assuming injuries do not kill the club. Long term, the club is also building for. The acquisition of Kevin Kolb may have shocked a lot of people, but, for the long term, it was the best thing the Eagles could do. The Eagles are contenders every year in the salary cap NFL. One of these days, they will make it to the promise land. Sure, the shock may kill most Ealges fans, but that is a happy problem! :)

I disagree. I don't think the Eagles are trying to rebuild as well as win the championship this year. They are solely concentrating on winning this year. Kevin Kolb is not exactly an ideal choice for the future, he's just insurance in case McNabb goes down again. If the Eagles are looking at the future, there's no way they can win this year. And they're not, grabbing old guys like Takeo Spikes and Jerrimiah Trotter isn't really looking toward to future. Plus Dawkins is 33 years old and they haven't got a decent backup for him. They have to win now, if they don't and they concentrate on the future, that sets the franchise back another 5 years from contention.

Exactly...good clubs have do this all the...the kolb draft was really no different than Winston Justice being drafted last year or when Shepperd and Brown were taken in 2002 (?) and so on...they draft for needs a few years in advanced...

We will see insan...but i guarantee you, unless Feeley, McNabb and (if he's on the team, contingent on injuries in the preseason) Holcomb go down, Kolb will not...will not see the field...

I can't understand the Kolb pick for the life of me. I tried so hard, talked to Eagles fans from school, read newspapers and ESPN, and I STILL can't understand the pick. It just doesn't make any sense.

The Eagles drafted this year like they did in 2002, when they selected Lito Sheppard, Sheldon Brown, and Brian Westbrook. They are always looking ahead by keeping the foundation strong. Takeo was a gap filler, and this is Trotter's final year. However, in the last 2 drafts, the Eagles have drafted three LB's, one was a starter last year and is being groomed as Trotter's replacement. Two others are battling for the other LB starting position this year.

The only long term hole this club has, as you have pointed out, is safety with Dawkins. This position will likely be addressed in the draft net season.

Beyond that, your hopes for an Eagles demise is not going to happen anytime soon. Sorry to break your heart, but that is the truth of the matter.

But when the Eagles drafted Sheppard and Brown, did they have legit guys at that position already? Drafted a backup QB for McNabb is fine, in fact I agree, but with the first pick? I disagree with that pick highly. Not only is it not needed but it's a huge slap in the face to McNabb. I agreed with McNabb when he compained about it, he was right to be upset, I would be upset too. Draft a QB in the 5th or 6th round and grab a linebacker, safety, or reciever with the first pick.

It was motivation for McNabb as well...also his contract is structured to end after this season (this is the last year of guaranteed money). And yes, when they drafted Sheppard and Brown they had all-pro corner Troy Vincent and pro-bowler Bobby Taylor, both of whom made the eagles secondary dominant for the better part of a decade and 1/2

Every year they say the samething about the eagles. its now or never, this is there last shot, they're aging and yet they always are fine next year. (KNOCK ON WOOD) The eagles are great at evaluating talent and planning for the future as well as playing for the present. They have a lot of young talent everywhere except behind dawkins and trotter and spikes now.

I agree...actually Omar Gaither is going to take some time from Trotter this year...in spot starts last year, he performed well. C.J. Gaddis was drafted to replace Dawk and while he won't play much this year, he's in the cards...the eagles always do this...if anything, tehy have a young team you just don't know about (look at the o-line for example)

I don't literally mean now or never. Obviously the Eagles will be contenders again. The article is based around "the McNabb era". I think this year is his last hope.

i think if mcnabb can show that he's healthy he will be ok. mcnabb's era can continue for a few more years as long as he's healthy. When he's on the field he's in my top 5 or 6 qbs in the nfl.
