Nothing New...

Not Much NEW Info. Twins are still looking to trade Johan (and now maybe Joe Nathan), but I am going to shy away from any more speculation because all it does is lead to meltdowns (see Trading KG to Chicago, and then ultimately to Boston).

With speculation you put together trades that you want, but know it won’t happen. Just look at this Johan thing. A few weeks ago we had Johan going to the Mets for Jose Reyes or David Wright, Carlos Gomez and Mike Pelfrey. We had him going to the Yankees for Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Ian Kennedy, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain. We had him to Boston for Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz (and maybe more). Let’s not forget to mention the Dodgers who were going to give us Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche, Clayton Kershaw and Jonathan Broxton.

Now what do we have? We have possible deals with the Yankees that include Cabrera, Kennedy and a Minor Leaguer, we have a Mets possibility that has us getting Gomez and who knows what, a Red Sox deal for Buchholz or (more likely) Jon Lester and Coco Crisp.

I can sit around all day and say well if we throw Joe Nathan into the mix we would be able to get everything we want. Except that is wrong. I bet if we traded Nathan and Johan together we would still not get what we want in return. More likely we would just get more prospects that we hope would be like Liriano.

The Twins released two players off their 40-man roster yesterday, clearing room for a possible deal. They could still pick up two more guys AND have a spot for a Rule-V player (which we like to have).

I was going to write about our Play-By-Play announcers for all sports and give a little info on them, but I just tiraded on speculation again. Damn Trades!

[UPDATE]: LENIII, who reported on his blog l that the Twins would trade Nathan, has just said the Twins have had serious discussion with the Red Sox. The Twins want Ellsbury, Buchholz and prospects for Johan. Other names have been mentioned such as speedy outfielder Brandon Moss and Kevin Youkilis. I am a fan of that. At least it looks like we are making an effort.

Theo Epstein held onto Trot Nixon forever. Elsbury has the same death grip upon him. You would have to kill someone to get Elsbury. I may be wrong about this, but after watching the Nixon offers, I'm pretty sure Jacoby is off limits. Youk is probably off limits. And choose: Lester or Buchholz (2 h's), you won't get both. (joke: YOU'LL TAKE CRISP AND LIKE IT!)

aside: Santana is a jerk for not taking the Twin's 4yr $80M extension.

For the Santana jerk comment I feel a Manny tirade coming on about how you wouldn't stay at your job if a company in NY offered you 25% to 50% more money.

how is santana a jerk for wanting to get paid...its not the 20 mil a year issue...its the 4 years...santana will want a 6+ year contract...and i don't blame him...i'd rather be getting paid like pavano, than rehabilitating like Prior...

I don't even have to look at the link to know who you're talking about. How does it feel losing your closer to the Reds?

How do you replace the best player in the game? With the best player in the game of course.

If Twins lose Nathan and Santana they will really be hurting unless they get something worth having in return.

that "return" won't be worth much in 2008...most likely close to MLB ready prospects, which suggest that team is more prepared for a 2009 or '10 run, in my opinion...

And then in 2012 or 2013 they'll lose Morneau, Mauer, and Liriano and start all over again.

With their nucleus, if they pick up a few more great young players, they could definitely win a championship sometime from 09-12. The Central is loaded next year, but the Tigers are getting old, and although the Indians are looking very strong for the future, the Twins would be right with them (or probably ahead, if the Tribe loses Sabathia). Even with Santana and Mauer, they're still far from a lock to make the playoffs next year - they'd have to beat two teams from Detroit, Cleveland, Boston, and New York, and hope nobody like Toronto makes a run.

Ian Kennedy isn't going anywhere. Brian Cashman has already had a conversation with Joba Chamberlain about his name popping up in trade rumors and confirmed he would likely be included in a deal for a top flight player, whether it be Santana or Miguel Cabrera.

Not my man Joba...love that guy. I think he could have been the closer of the future. Bulldog attitude and a blazing fastball.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but everybody else is saying that Chamberlain is the one who is untouchable. Hughes is the one in most of the rumors anyhow...

Exactly.

There are trade rumors that are made up by journalists trying to meet a deadline, and there are rumors about conversations which have actually happened. Sort of like this;

  • Twins GM: For Santana, we want Cano, Cabrera and either Hughes or Kennedy.
  • Yanks GM: No. You can have Chamberlain, though. Or no deal.
  • Twins GM: OK
