0 commentsThis past Saturday, over 100 of the top senior prospects in the nation took the field for the 58th Annual Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The North, led by Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, defeated the South 27-0. The Heisman Trophy winning quarterback led his team down the field during a 75-yard opening drive which ended in a 7 yard touchdown run by Penn State running back Tony Hunt. Hunt carried the ball 8 times for a total 39 yards and one TD, and was named Senior Bowl MVP. Smith finished the game with five completions on 15 attempts for 52 yards, one TD and no sacks.
The North drove down the field on their second possession with 12 plays for 30 yards, which set up a 38 yard field goal by Colorado kicker Mason Crosby giving the North a 10-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the North increased their lead after recovering a fumble by Florida QB Chris Leak on the South's 27 yard line which set up a 7-yard TD pass from Michigan State QB Drew Stanton to East Carolina WR Audrae Allison. After a quick three and out by the South, the North was able to move down the field again going 26 yards, to set up a 31 yard field goal by Crosby making the score 20-0.
After halftime, the North put seven points in the third quarter when recovering a fumble that put them on the South's 18 yard line, setting up a seven yard pass from Smith to Washington WR Jason Hill.
Leak was able to complete 5 of 9 passes for a total of 23 yards, and was sacked three times, fumbling the ball once, which lead to an easy score for the North. The South's offensive line had a difficult time stopping the North's defense from getting to their quarterback, as they gave up eight sacks. Nebraska DE Jay Moore had three of those sacks and forced two fumbles. Moore finished the day with three solo stops, three sacks and two forced fumbles, for a total of -21 yards.
The North finished the game with 17 first downs, 110 rushing yards, and 154 passing yards. The South, on the other hand, finished with six first downs with -35 yards rushing, 128 yards passing and three fumbles.
The Senior Bowl is considered the final prelude to the annual Scouting Combine in Indianapolis (February 21-27) and individual university "pro days". The NFL Draft is set for April 28-29 in New York.
