Non-All-Star Hafner Sets First-Half and Team Records

12
Vote

Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner became the first player in major league history to hit five grand slams before the All-Star break when he connected in the second inning against Baltimore on Friday night.

Hafner homered off Kris Benson to give the Indians a 6-0 lead. It also broke the club record for grand slams in a season that Hafner shared with Al Rosen, who hit four in 1951.

The 29-year-old Hafner is the fourth player to hit five grand slams in a season. Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees set the major-league record with six in 1987. Jim Gentile of the Orioles (1961) and Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs (1955) both hit five.

Hafner, who was not selected to play in next week's All-Star Game in Pittsburgh despite being one of the finalists for the last spot on the AL roster, is 7-for-10 with five homers and 25 RBI with the bases loaded this season. He entered Friday's game hitting .319 with 24 homers and 70 RBI.

Lou Gehrig (1934), Sid Gordon (1950), Gentile (1961) and Jim Northrup (1968) all hit four grand slams before the All-Star break.

The Indians led Baltimore 9-0 at press time.

Yep, he definitely doesn't deserve to be an All Star. I'd much rather see AJ Pierzieoalkayananaaasky in the All Star game, even though he has just one more HOMERUN this season than Hafner has GRAND SLAMS.

Seriously. It was tough for me to post this as news and not go into a ranting and raving opinion piece.

Pean, I think this is a great idea. However, how do you envision this looking once it's up and running? For instance, do you see a voting system of top user submitted pictures? Say, having the top 5 up at a given time, or perhaps just showing the 10 most recent? Just curious.

Hafner is outplaying just about every offensive player in the majors right now. His OPS of 1.117 is just ridiculous. I personally think they should have DHs in the All Star game. That way we wouldn't have to watch pitchers hit and players like Hafner and Giambi would make it.

Perhaps the World Series can effect the idea of an NL or AL game of baseball... If the AL wins the World Series, there are DHs. If the NL wins, there are no DHs. That way the All-Star Game and the World Series will be even more intertwined. To be fair, you have no control over Grand Slams. It's just luck that you come to the plate in a bases-loaded situation. Some batters may not get 6 opportunities of that per season.

But it still takes a very clutch hitter to come through in six tries. Especially when one was on his birthday (I got to see that one in person) that's a lot of pressure to handle. :-)

Fine, take grand slams out of the equation. Hafner is still in another league. If it weren't for the fact that he's on a below-.500 team, he would be a good bet to win MVP this year. I watch Hafner every day and I often think about how the world would absolutely go crazy over him if he played in New York or Boston. Don't get me wrong, I'll gladly keep him for myself, but he deserves far more recognition than he's getting. He is the best hitter in the American League and behind only Albert Pujols in all of baseball.

Lots of people are better than Ryan Howard (though Howard is good).
