No More Drafts

Just a thought, sure other people have mentioned it: If you have a salary cap, there is no justification for having a draft.

Drafts are intrinsically unfair to players.  The only reasonable justification for them is that in the absence of drafts, rich teams would get all the talent.  But if you have a reasonably tight salary cap (see: NFL and NBA), there are no rich teams.

If the player's unions weren't so ineffectual...

First of all, I don't know if the NFL cap is really all that tight. There are plenty of teams with a good deal of cap space since they increased it signifcantly after the most recent near-strike. Money isn't the 100% factor driving players' decisions to go to teams. How many players is the salary proposals were equal would choose the Browns over the Patriots. Currently, the draft os just about the only way that currently bad teams have access to top flight talent. As far as the player's union, I doubt that they would want a free agent free-for-all for rookies. As far as I know, those draftees aren't part of the players' union until they have signed with the team that drafted them, so I don't know why the union would stick up for them. That would just increase the already ridiculous amount of money spent on unproven players, and reduce the cap space available for veterans. If you're like me and think that Joe Thomas getting paid more than Tom Brady is ridiculous, imagine the leverage that he would have if he could pick which team he went to.

The reason why a player would choose the Patriots over the Browns -- despite the fact that they are likely to get more playing time/exposure on the Browns -- would be the perception that the browns aren't simply currently bad, but fundamentally and organizationally bad. There is no reason to reward bad organizations.

If you took econ 101, you'd recognize that the rooks being paid more argument also falls short. Joe Thomas might have his choice of organization, but the organization would also have its choice of talent. As it is, the pressure on teams to sign their first round picks is at least as high as it is for the players to sign.

A stronger attempt at a rebuttal would be to argue that teams in larger markets would attract better players on account of increased potential non-football income. But that happens anyways under any free agency regime, and giving teams with more fans better odds then teams with fewer fans is rather fair, at least, to the fans.
