No More Booing!!!

During the Cold War, there was a theory called "The Domino Effect" that theorized that if one country were to fall to Communism, all the surrounding countries would fall as well, just like dominoes.  Hopefully, "The Domino Effect" will not rear its ugly head with the following proposal currently under review in the state of Washington.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is considering a proposal that will ban booing and offensive chants.  Now, of course "offensive chants" is sufficiently vague enough that it can encompass all sorts of chants, all dependent on who makes the determination what is "offensive."  Certainly, profanity falls into this category, but there are a lot of other chants that would probably fall victim to this proposal.  In a classic case of going way too far, the association wants to extend the ban to "booing."  Booing is a perfectly non-offensive way of showing displeasure at whatever has gone wrong.  It is completely unfair to expect viewers of a sporting event to non-offensively cheer when something good happens, but completely shut up when something bad happens.  The proposal is being considered to encourage new coaches and referees to take up the profession, the thought being that many do not because they are afraid of the negativity.  If there are people out there who are using this as an excuse not to take up coaching or refereeing, they shouldn't ever be considering it in the first place!  Learning how to handle negativity and negative situations is an integral part of both jobs and to try and eliminate booing does neither a favor.  Were this proposal to pass and catch on and start a "Domino Effect" across the country, watching a sporting event would become an impossible exercise in self-control for all the fans!  Some areas of the country have even gone so far as to ban ALL cheering on the sidelines, be it positive or negative!  These "Silent Games" are an abomination and do nothing to enhance the games, I would argue that it is counter-productive as it completely ruins the atmosphere inherent to sporting events.

In a final historical reference, I remind everybody of President Harry S Truman's famous quote: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."  If you are unwilling to handle the pressures commensurate with a job, you shouldn't even consider taking on the job.

This is just another example of what Roger Ebert called "The Facism of the 90's". It's no different then giving everybody a trophy or refusing to say that a team "won" or "lost". Players get booed, players can lose games and if they can't handle it, maybe they shouldn't be playing. Half the experience of going to a game is being part of the crowd.

In other news, A-Rod donated his 2007 salary to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association...

The point of the crowd is to try to lift the home team, not cheer if they're doing well. Good crowds are loud when the team is struggling.

I don't mind booing, boo the hell out of people! But I don't boo my team. Booing your own team is like calling your girlgriend ugly. Even if she is ugly, she's still YOUR girlfriend, you don't call her ugly. Name ONE time where booing your own team is beneficial and I'll change my mind on this.

I said "beneficial", not "acceptable"... and no it wasn't. Silence is a more effective message to send to ownership/decision makers about their prodcut than a boo.

So if you are unhappy with something, keep your mouth shut, don't say anything, hold your breath and then walla!!! Change will miraculously happen.

you're confusing the issue. But even still, non-action works best of all. If you have a "Rooting" interest in something, why would you "Boo!" at it?? Criticizing is one thing, Booing is not criticism. Would you Boo your kids?? Boo yourself?

Problem is that A-Rod wouldn't hear my criticism. He does, evidently, hear my boos. Now Brosius, that's another story. Never, ever would think of booing him.

I say Boo to Manny, for literally selling out his fanship. Now, if I didn't write this, then no one would know I felt that way. Hmm, if a fan boos in an empty stadium (Trop Field?), does anyone notice?

No. I'll admit it. I "experimented" a little with fanship back in college. But that's what college kids do!

Cheering is acceptable but booing is not? Wow, thought this was the US of A, love it or leave it. Lemme get it straight...it's fine to applaud a good play or a good play as a collective group but if you are unhappy or disprove of a bad play/er there's no recourse? Besides 'criticism'? But isn't booing essentially the same as criticism, except that it is collectively generated?

I'm just a fan of not degrading the things I "care" about. That being said, I'll boo the hell out of the opponents. Booing is a lazy way of saying nothing good. However, it's a fun mass psychology tool (no one boos alone).

I'm in agreement with Manny. Going to a game and booing your own team/players does nothing at all because the team is still getting your $$$$ because you're still putting your own butt in their seats and stuffing their food and beverages into your pie hole. If all the unhappy fans would stay home, the man would care a lot faster.
