No Hitter
When a pitcher or pitcher(s) give up no hits through the course of a game.
All pitchers are credited with the no-hitter, so even if one pitches 8 2/3 innings and the other 1/3, they have both thrown a no hitter. Babe Ruth was involved in a no-hitter in 1917 where he was credited with 0 innings pitched after walking the leadoff runner, being ejected from the game, and then his replacement, Ernie Shore, preceded to no-hit the remainder of the game. The Major League record for most pitchers in a no-hitter is 6 by the Astros against the Yankees in 2003.
Under MLB rules, to be counted as a no hitter the whole game must have no hits by one team. If a pitcher throws 9 no hit innings, then loses the no-hitter in the 10th, he is not credited for the no-hitter even though he threw a regulation game. The game must also be a 9-inning game to be counted.
It is possible to lose a no-hitter, having been done twice in the Major Leagues.
The MLB record is held by Nolan Ryan, with 7.
