No Friday Night or Saturday Football??

6
Vote

by user Pnatt

In the Australian Football League (AFL) games are played on Friday Nights, Saturday Afternoons, Saturday Nights, and Sunday Afternoons. However, I was surprised to learn that the NFL does not have games on Friday Nights or on Saturdays but instead only has games on Sunday Afternoons, Sunday Nights, and Monday Nights. Why doesn't the NFL have games on Friday Nights or on Saturdays??

The NFL doesn't like to compete with college (which has Saturday cornered), it likes the stage ALL to itself... Aren't the Sunday NFL games on like a Wednesday morning in Australia?? PLus it's Spring there right??? NFL games later in the season start popping up on Thursday nights and even on the occasional Firday or Saturday

Fridays are the WORST night for TV ratings, so all sports (and Commercial TV shows) tend to shy away from Fridays... people are out having fun, not home watching TV...

In the US Friday night (or Firday, as some would call it) is High School Football night for the majority of schools, some play on Saturday afternoon if they have problems with gangs/hoodlums/etc at night games. Saturday is, as Manny pointed out, dedicated to College football and Sunday is Pro football.

Nah they don't show any NFL games here, only the Super Bowl. Umm I thought it had something to do with the Sabbath or something, cos there's a substantial population of Jewish people in America I think. Cos I thought that it's weird that there's no games on a Friday or Saturday.

oops bad comment. I mean I thought that one of the reasons that there's no NFL games on a Saturday is because of the Sabbath.

You won't find any pro sports catering to any religions in the US, Pnatt.

I'm aware of that. I am a Jew. sheesh. All I'm saying is that we don't have enough Jews to change the day of a professional sport.

Wow it does I just looked at the NFL schedule again and noticed it. I should have noticed it before. Sorry for wasting everyone's time.

For religious reasons, until 1982, the British Grand Prix was always held on a Saturday (uniquely). Then F1 said move it to Sunday or else. In Britain, there was once never any sport on Sunday. Football was confined to Saturday. Cricket missed out Sunday. Golf was the only exception I can think of. Even today, things such as the middle Sunday of Wimbledon, has no play on it due to traditional religious reasons.

So is it confirmed that the reason that the NFL don't have games on Saturdays early in the season is because of college football?

Yes. Several people wrote that above. Friday is high school, Saturday is college, Sunday (and Money) are NFL. Preseason NFL games are held on a variety of days, as they're in summer before the college season begins. The NFL kickoff game is usually on a Thursday, in recent years anyway. Late in the NFL season, after the college football season is over, the NFL schedule will expand to include Saturday.

That would be Monday*, not Money. Money is not a day of the week :)
