Nixon hurt; severity unclear

Boston Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon was hurt yesterday in the fourth inning of Boston's 10-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on a day the New York Yankees creeped to within a half game of the division-leading Sox.
Nixon's current status is day-to-day with what the club classified an "upper arm strain". An MRI today should determine whether he will have to go on the disabled list. Should he be moved to the DL, Wily Mo Peña and Gabe Kapler would likely be platooning in right field for the foreseable future. This may have drastically changed both Boston's available players and their needs on Trade Deadline Day. Peña had been rumored to be on the block, and Boston had been focused on pitching (starting and relief). If Nixon's injury is serious, Peña may be off the block, and any infielder but Kevin Youkilis might be up there (likely Mike Lowell).
Boston may also, like the Yankees, trade for an outfielder, though Kapler and Peña are both capable fill-ins. Then again, it's always difficult to tell what Boston GM Theo Epstein might do next.
