SECOND IN A SERIES
Moments ago, the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-3. This marks the Phillies 9,991 loss in franchise history. Hence, the club is only nine losses away from becoming the first professional sports team in North America to lose 10,000 games.
The Phillies are in a pattern of winning a game, then losing a game. At this rate, the Phillies will either surpass this losing milestone in the Colorado series right before the All-Star break, or in the St. Louis series right afterward. The St. Louis series is set to be played in Philadelphia.
What may be poetic justice in action, it is quite possible that Barry Bonds will be breaking the all-time home run MLB mark at the same time. Really, those two milestones belong together. One goes to an organization where winning has never been priority one, while the other goes to a player who has never cared to play the sport properly. The only thing that would have made these two milestone perfect would have been if they were set in the same game. Sadly, this is impossible, unless Bonds is traded.
Returning to the feeble history of the Phillies, the massive losing began in the Phils inaugural season in 1883. During that season, the Phillies won 17 times. Unfortunately, the club lost 81 times. This resulted in a winning percentage of .173.
The good news is that the Phillies winning percentage has increased since 1883. It now stands at .468. This winning percentage is still awful, but not as horrendously bad as the .173 mark that the club had in 1883.
And now, the Phillies stand only nine losses away from 10,000!
