News Brief: Eagles Dump Reed, Sign Mahe

We've all heard coaches say that no single player or unit can be responsible for a loss. While this is often true, when looking back at the Eagles-Packers game on Sunday it is hard not to blame special teams, specifically Greg Lewis and J.R. Reed who handled return duties and each had a muffed punt. While both mistakes were critical and Reed is arguably a better return man, because Lewis brings value to the receiver position the Eagles chose to cut Reed on Tuesday and bring back Reno Mahe, who held the job as Eagles return man last season. While Mahe was by no means a standout, he did manage to hold on to the ball and avoid mistakes.

While I kind of expected Mahe back, I was hoping they could find someone else. I guess you go with what works to some extent rather than someone unknown to the team though.

Makes you yearn for Bethel Johnson... I personally would have taken a shot with bloom...they both can field returns, but Bloom could be good...Mahe is average in returning (at best)...

Yes, I would have liked to seem them resign Bloom too, the only thing I can think of is that Reid would worry with him being a rookie and all he might make mistakes because of the pressure. I guess with Mahe you more or less know what you'll be getting. It stinks that the Eagles can never luck out with a rookie like Devin Hester or something, I was hoping that was what they got with Bloom but obviously he did not show much in the preseason.

I agree...

But Reid takes a risk by signing J.R. Reed and having Lewis also field returns...yet Bloom as a rook would concern him

His reason for cutting Bloom was the bloom was an easy tackle (Reed did look a bit more untackleable)...but Reed was equally as incapable and now we don't have a 4th safety, which was the reason for signing Reed...

In regards to Bloom I meant in my previous post Andy Reid's willingness to take a risk now, after the results of game one. I thought maybe Bloom would get a second chance this week, but they opted for Mahe instead. Prior to week one evidently Reid did feel comfortable with J.R. Reed, who had returned kicks before, and Lewis who generally holds onto the ball as a receiver. There was some risk involved, as there was with Bloom, and he went with the Lewis/Reed option which did not pay off. Now I think he didn't want to take another risk with week one's results fresh on everyone's minds, thus the signing of tried and true Mahe.

I think this makes the fifth time Reed has been cut in the last 24 months. If you're a journeyman punt returner and play like that, you're gonna get the pink slip.

I can't believe that I am about to say that I am relieved Reno Mahe is back.

Greg Lewis deserves to be cut before Reed. Lewis screwed up twice. Reed atleast looked good on kick returns. Realistically Mr Softy and Reed both deserve a one way bus ticket out of Philly for good.

It appears that Lewis has the old problems that Willie Gault used to have with the Bears - Million Dollar Legs but hands of stone.
