New name, same lousy team

We now have reason to start to fear the professional baseball team from Tampa Bay. While every other team has been working the phone lines and meeting players this offseason trying to improve lineups, Tampa Bay may have made the biggest splash so far. I'm not talking about them signing Alex Rodriguez, or making a push for Johan Santana. No, Tampa has finally found the formula for immediate success. They have officially changed their name from the "Devil Rays" to the "Rays." Wow! Watch out Major League Baseball; this team is not messing around.

I imagine the Tampa brass meeting at the end of another disappointing season where they finished in the AL East cellar. How could they turn this team into a legitimate contender?

Add some veteran players to provide some leadership to the young talent? Nope. Add a quality starting pitcher? No thanks. Re-sign AL comeback player of the year and team MVP Carlos Pena? Maybe. Improve the worst bullpen in baseball? No way!

Remove two syllables from the team name? BINGO!!

I really like this move. I always found the name Devil Rays so cumbersome to say. This is obviously the reason why this team has sucked since its inception. Not because the owners are cheapskates that refuse to increase payroll, or because Tropicana Field is a glorified warehouse. It's because they picked the wrong name.

I am so glad to see this young franchise finally find the recipe for success. Now if I could suggest a new team slogan for the 2008 season.

Tampa Bay Rays: Exorcising our demons, but still stinking up the league.

In an argument with MJD, I decried that "Devil" was offensive to a significant populace. It seems that the good folks running the Tampa Bay organization concur. Therefore, I endorse the name change from a marketing and political correctness perspective.

This now lends to question the future of the New Jersey hockey franchise name. Surely if a "Devil Ray" is now changed to "Ray" then it just makes sense to modify "Devils" to "Blanks".

This is a political correct message sponsored by Tyrone Briggs.

This franchise is so stupid. They changed the name to Rays, to incorporate the sun. But then they go and leave a patch of a devil ray on the uniform. If you're going to change your whole motif don't hold onto the old team logo. I remember the "old" Devil Rays, they aren't worth holding onto.

Does it not make more sense for this organization to be the "Stingrays"?

I always wondered what the hell a devil ray was. Is it some kind of stingray or just a made up name?

No, it's a local name for a Manta ray, because of the flaps that look like devil's horns. They took it out of the name because NO ONE calls the fish a Devil Ray. Let's admit, it was a stupid name to begin with. The new ownership didn't pick the name and they wanted to put their own stamp on the franchise.

What happened when the North Satrs changed their name to the Stars? They Won the Stanley Cup.

What happened when the Mighty Ducks became the Ducks? They Won the Stanley Cup.

My prediction for the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays: They will win the Stanley Cup! They'll have to do better on ice than they do on grass, it's physically impossible not too.

The Tampa Bay Thunder, Tampa Bay Banditos, Tampa Bay Storm, or Tampa Bay Mosquitoes are all more apt names for the Rays. They are hurt by playing in a yukky stadium that is in an inconvenient and dangerous part of St Petersburg. For you Red Sox fans it would be like your team renaming itself the New England Red Sox and putting a stadium in Kittery, Maine. Well, almost.

As I've ben saying since March, Go Rays!!

By the way, they made this change at the end of last year, but MLB made them hold off a year because it was too much work for them.

And by the way... No one calls the fish a Devil Ray, they are Manta Rays or Giant Rays. And a "stingray" is a particular family of rays, or a Corvette but not a particular fish.

Actually, they do (come on, they complain about EVERYTHING)- because of the Rays tank with 30 or so cow rays (not Manta) in center-right field. Also PETA was on Akinori Iwamura for his alligator leathered glove.

This name sounds stupid. Tampa Bay Devil Rays at least rolled off the tongue. Tampa Bay Rays, or The Rays, all sounds awkward to me. But I'm glad that Tampa is at least trying to make their team's name sound as horrible as they play.

Pissed or relieved, because his would have been 3,000 words on how this marks the beginning of a new era in Tampa Bay baseball. I'm always amazed by his articles on the D-Rays because putting a positive spin on what they do is like trying to convince a 40 year old rabbi that Santa exists. Yet, Manny finds some way to do it, and do it well.

"Win one for the Devil"

Devil is lived backwards

it beats the crap out of "Gamma Rays"

YOU can vote on my poll for which name YOU think it should be...

The Rays have the potential to be a good team. They have some great young talent in Crawford, Kazmir,Pena, Upton, and Young. These are all guys other teams would love to have. Unfortunately, the Rays management refuses to increase the payroll to improve the starting pitching and bullpen. Not to mention Joe Maddon needs to go. This guy hasn't done anything to make this team better during his tenure. I wonder if Rays management figures that they won't be able to compete with the Red Sox and Yankees any time soon, so they just continue to mail it in. But hey, at least they have new uniforms.

I like Joe. I think he is a very good fit for the guys they have. They are like a AAAA team and he is a patient handed, smart manager of people. He's WAY better suited than Lou Piniella!

Joe Maddon seems like a nice guy, but I don't think that he does anything to make the Rays better. I agree that Piniella wasn't suited for that role either. I know it's too late now, but I thought a Joe Girardi type would be good in Tampa. A guy that can teach the younger guys, and still kick them in the butt when they need it.

Stu Sternberg has money. He's building smart. They are trying to combine the philosophy of building a franchise from the bottom up and sustain it a la the late 80's Braves and carry themselves with class, professionalism and dignity of the New York Yankees.

The Rays 66-96 (cough, cough the best Worst place finish in BASEBALL HISTORY) came in the AL East.

They are better than people think they are... You will see.

And by the way... It's been a FEW years since you've seen the word Devil on their unis. It's not anywhere on the stadium unless it's from the past. It's not even printed on the game tickets at home. Only the team website had www."devil"rays.com in it.

I agree that the Rays have talent. But do you really think that Stu Sternberg is going to hold onto it? The Rays seem content with their small market status. You're right they took the word devil off their uni's, but why keep the old ray logo on them?
