The best way for a team to start their first road trip of the season is to face a pitcher who realistically shouldn't be in the Major Leagues. (It also helps knowing you won't have to face Johan Santana). Beginning this, his eleventh Major League season, Sidney Ponson has a career 80-96 record with a 4.89 ERA. He has had two winning seasons in his previous ten, and has posted three seasons with an ERA below 4.00. It's a joke he's been around this long, quite frankly. And the Yankees greeted him accordingly, posting five runs in the first two innings. The Twins mercifully pulled him after five and two thirds innings, in which he allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits while walking three. I know the Twins have concerns about their rotation, but no way should this guy get another start.

Conversely, Carl Pavano was solid again in his second start after missing the last year and a half. He allowed all six Minnesota hits and both runs, which were earned, in his seven innings of work, and even more importantly, issued no walks.

For the Yankees, the top three in the order did the most damage, with Johnny Damon having two hits and scoring two runs, Derek Jeter with three hits and two runs, and Bobby Abreu three hits, three runs, four RBI, including his first homer of the season. Alex Rodriguez continued his assault on his opt-out clause, chipping in with a two-run homer, his fifth of the season. Jorge Posada also drove in two runs with a double in the first.

For Minnesota, Torii Hunter was the only player with more than one hit, he had twow, and also scored a run and drove in a run.

The series continues tomorrow with Andy Pettitte facing Boof Bonser.
