Randy Johnson started off bad, but Matt Clement started off worse and didn't improve as the game went on. The New York Yankees beat up Clement and went on to beat the Boston Red Sox, 8-6. Johnson threw 105 pitches in just 5 innings and allowed 5 runs on 2 walks and 9 hits, but he struck out 8 and retired 9 out of the last 10 he faced. He improved his record to 6-4 despite a 5.89 ERA for the year. Clement allowed all 8 Yankee runs on 9 hits and 4 walks. He had a rough time in the 2nd when he allowed 4 runs and was hit in the leg by a grounder from Bernie Williams. His 5th inning was just as bad when he allowed another 4 runs on 4 straight singles, a wild pitch, and an inheritted runner scored when Julian Taverez took the mound.
The Red Sox tried to mount a comeback in the 8th against Kyle Farnsworth, but failed to score any runs despite having the bases loaded at one point. David Ortiz was the final out of the inning when he watched a third strike go by. He was 0-5 on the night with 4 k's.
Melky Cabrera lead off for the Yankees in place of Johnny Damon, who sat out the game, and went 2-4 with 4 RBI and walk. Bernie Williams was 3-5 with 2 runs. Derek Jeter was just 1-5, but he was the only Yankee to have an extra base hit when he doubled.
For the Red Sox, Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis both had big days. Youkilis was 3-5 with a homer, 2 runs scored and 2 rbi. Manny Ramirez was 3-4 with 2 homers, 3 runs scored, and 3 rbi. It looks as if Manny is about to go on an offensive tear. He homered in every game in the Yankee series and is 8 for his last 12.
Before the game Lenny DiNardo was placed on the 15-Day DL with a strained neck. Jermaine Van Buren was called up from Pawtucket. Van Buren, who has a 1.17 ERA with 17 K's in 15.1 IP in AAA, will likely be sent down before Friday's game when David Wells is expected to be activated in time to make the start.
