Johnny Damon's leadoff homer and Alex Rodriguez's three-run shot in the seventh helped propel the Yankees over the Red Sox 7-5.
Jaret Wright pitched five shutout innings and surrendered only four hits while Tim Wakefield gave up six earned runs on six hits and five walks in 6 2/3 innings. At one point in the seventh Wakefield threw ten consecutive balls.
Derek Jeter singled in the third to drive in Andy Phillips and Damon and Rodriguez scored on one of Doug Mirabelli's three passed balls on the night in the sixth to account for the rest of the Yankee runs.
Mirabelli singled off Scott Proctor in the sixth to score Trot Nixon and put the Red Sox on the board. After Proctor walked two in the seventh Kyle Farnsworth entered the game and gave up a three-run homer to Manny Ramirez to pull Boston within three, 7-4. With one out in the eighth Farnsworth walked two consecutive batters and Joe Torre brought in Mariano Rivera to face David Ortiz. Rivera got Ortiz to pop out behind second base and then allowed a run to score on a Ramirez single. Trot Nixon then fouled out to third to end the inning.
Rivera finished off the ninth for his ninth save and pulled the Yankees back to within 1.5 games of first in the AL East.
Tonights game also marked the return of Gary Sheffield to the New York lineup. He went 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
