Despite Keith Foulke's best effort to give the game away, the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, 9-5 in the first game of their three game series. after the Yankees took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third, Boston took control after scoring 4 in the 3rd inning and took a 9-1 lead into the 9th. Foulke allowed 4 runs on 5 hits including home runs to Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada. Even the outs he managed to get were hard hit balls. It got to the point where Jonathan Papelbon had to warm up in the bullpen in case Foulke couldn't get the last out.
This was the worst outing of the year for Foulke, who had seemed to be improving thus far; after last night his ERA dropped to 4.81.
Curt Schilling was sharp, striking out 6 in 8 IP for his 7th win of the year, and the 199th of his career. He allowed just 1 run on 5 hits and managed to keep the ball in the yard after two straight starts of allowing 3 longballs.
Chien-Ming Wang, on the other hand, was not sharp. He allowed 7 runs in 6 innings of work, striking out just 1. He walked only 1, but his control was off all game. He was throwing a lot of balls into the dirt in front of home and gave Posada quite a workout.
Alex Cora lead the way for the Sox going 3-4 and helped to turn a couple of difficult double plays. Mark Loretta was 2-4 and Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz each had 2 hits and 3 RBI. Ramirez hit his 8th home run of the year while Ortiz lined a 3-0 pitch for a single, driving in the first two Red Sox runs of the night.
Before the game Abe Alvarez was sent down to Pawtucket to make room for David Riske who came off the DL.
