A less devastaing loss this time around...
The Yankees got run support for Jeff Karstens in the first two innings, only to give it back each time. While Alex Rodriguez got an RBI single in the top of the seventh, it wasn't enough to finish off the Sox as the Olde Towne Team hung on, 7-5. Good luck tommorow night against Dice-K...
Tylersalt's Take
| W: | Josh Beckett | (4-0, 2.55) |
| L: | Jeff Karstens | (0-1, 14.54) |
| S: | Jonathan Papelbon | (5, 0.00) |
The Boston Red Sox (11-5, 1st in AL East) won their fourth straight, defeating the New York Yankees (8-8, 3rd in AL East) 7-5. Alex Rodriguez went 2-4 with a single and a double, but the Yankees are now 0-6 when he does not hit a home run.
Josh Beckett (W, 4-0) became the first 4-game winner in the majors, despite his weakest outing so far. He threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and five runs (four earned), walking two while striking out seven. His fastball was really working today, hitting 97 on the radar gun. Jeff Karstens (L, 0-1) did not fare as well, even as Beckett was pitching down to his level for the first two innings. Karstens went 4 1/3 giving up 7 earned runs on nine hits, two walks, and a strikeout in his first start of the year. Hideki Okajima, Mike Timlin, and Jonathan Papelbon (S, 5) combined to pitch 2 1/3 hitless innings out of the Boston pen to nail down the victory for Beckett.
Even some of the struggling parts of the Boston offense got into the game, as J.D. Drew was the only Sox player without a hit on the day. David Ortiz clubbed home run number 6, a two-run job off of Karstens in the fourth. Coco Crisp finally got his batting average above the Mendoza Line, going 2-4 (he got ANOTHER bunt single) and a stolen base and two runs scored to raise his average to .214. Manny Ramirez is now the only Sox regular to remain sub-.200, at .193.
As for the non-Rodriguez portions of the Bombers' lineup, Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano each had 2 hits, while Bobby Abreu went 0-3 with a walk and a run. Melky Cabrera, starting in center and leading off for the injured Johnny Damon, was 1-4 with an RBI. Backup catcher Wil Nieves is still hitless on the year as he tries his best to fill in for Jorge Posada. Good news for Yankees fans, Posada should be back either tomorrow or the next day. Jason Giambi added an RBI, but also struck out three times.
Notes...
| BOO | This user knows Tim McCarver SUCKS. |
Coming Up Next...
The rivals play one more game tomorrow at Fenway Park as the Red Sox send Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-2, 2.70) to the mound to try to sweep the Yankees at home for the first time in 17 years (!). The Bronx Bombers will counter with rookie Chase Wright (1-0, 5.40).
