New York Mets: best team in baseball?

The New York Mets have been on a tear as of late, with 8 straight wins including a recent sweep of the Phillies. Their free-agent signings, who had been largely unsuccessful up until this year, are really beginning to shine. Their hitting, starting pitching, and bullpen all appear to be solid.

BATTING

The Mets have some huge stars in their lineup. David Wright is likely their best all-around threat, with a .335 average, 14 homers, and 50 RBIs year. He is a part of the lethal 3-4-5 combination in the Mets' batting order, which also includes Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado.

Beltran is a big-time MVP candidate, with a .300 average, 18 homers, and 53 RBIs. What sets him apart is his speed--he has 12 steals. Beltran was signed after the 2004 season to a huge contract, but he dissappointed many in 2005. This year, he's earned every penny of his $13 million salary.

The other 'Carlos' in the Mets' lineup is Delgado, who was signed from Florida in the offseason. He has provided the exact production the Mets expected, with 19 homers and 49 RBIs. Another vital cog in this order is Jose Reyes, who leads the majors with 29 steals and has a team-high 54 runs from the leadoff spot. With this kind of all-around production, it could be argued that the Mets feature the best offense in all of baseball.

PITCHING

New York's pitching, which in previous years had been terrible, has been successful if not spectacular this year. As a team they have posted a 3.84 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP, both among the best marks in the NL.

They have been led (obviously) by Pedro Martinez, who has been lights-out this year. Oddly Pedro is just 6-2, but he has a 2.94 and a league-leading .90 WHIP. The other major component of the Mets' rotation is Tom Glavine, who is 9-2 this season.

But they are not the reason for the Mets' success this season. Arguably the most important player on the team is Billy Wagner, with 14 saves and a 2.20 ERA. He has provided the bullpen threat the Mets sorely needed, especially after 2005's Braden Looper debacle. Wagner, acquired from Philly in the offseason, has been one of the most reliable closers in the majors.

So that is how the Mets have fought their way to the best record in baseball. The only question is, "Can they keep it up?" The answer is, "probably yes." Their division is weakened from the poor play of the Braves, as they lead the NL East by nearly a double-digit margin. They appear to be complete, and they will reach the playoffs. The obstacle for them there will be the St. Louis Cardinals, who by then will have a healthy Albert Pujols. Until the Mets beat St. Louis, they will remain the class of the NL.

I assume there are no qualms about who was No. 1 in the Power Rankings this week then? :)

It's possible they're the best team in baseball right now, consindering the way they've been playing lately. But I don't think they have the most talent, and I don't think they're the most likely to win the World Series. I think the White Sox still have to be the heavy favorites, when you consider their bullpen from top to bottom and their scary offense. They're like the Red Sox without all the conflicts and egos. I think that Pedro and Glavine will start to show their age as the season progresses, as they've done the last couple of years, and the remainder of a rotation that's held together by duct tape will start to come unstuck. Their offense is good, but not good enough to make up for that kind of collapse. LoDuca has been injury prone in the late season in the past, so that will probably play a factor as well. I think the Tigers are also better than the Mets when it comes to ability to just win ball games, and I think the Cardinals or Astros could both take the Mets in a playoff series. But yes, RIGHT NOW, the Mets are probably the best team in baseball. But by "right now," I mean that could change next week. It's all about the way they've played the last couple of weeks.

You know, there aren't really a lot of personality conflicts or big egos on the Red Sox, at least from all accounts. It's a hard-working, blue-collar team, especially this year, especially now that Johnny Damon and Pedro are both gone. The only real conflict-prone player left is Manny, and he's pretty harmless. You're more thinking of the Red Sox of two or three years ago than of today, and you know what? Even with personality conflicts they WON THE WORLD SERIES. Thanks for the insightful commentary yet again. Good job. ;-)

By the way, how come the Astros still can't get any love? They went to the NLDS in 2004, and they went to the World Series in 2005. But still, all anyone talks about is the NL East and the Cardinals. What gives? What do the Astros have to do to get some stinkin' credit in the sports world?

I think Beltran has to be the best all-around player on the mets. the stats are better and he's been very good defensively as well.

Yeah, Beltran is great if he has someone good hitting behind him. He was really missing that last year. I still think they could get even better production out of him and the rest of the lineup, however, if they would bat him in the second spot in the lineup.

Yeah, I don't like LoDuca in the second spot. He doesn't have enough speed to bat there.

The Mets play in the worse division in baseball. They just beat a Phillies team that has packed it in. I would advise the Mets fans out there to chill out. You will win the NL East going away, but may be 1 and done in the playoffs. And forget to even think about a World Series ring...any AL team will smoke you.

With Beltran on pace for 40 home runs, it doesn't make much sense to bat him second. If anything, I'd rather have Wright there with .400 obp. Either way, both have too much pop to bat second, but I'll take that problem anyday.

I think that Wright being in front of Beltran or Delgado with that OBP is a wash. Either way, he'll be driving in runs and scoring runs. But with Beltran in the second spot, you have a guy that can steal bases or bunt, if you absolutely need him to. I like that in a number 2 hitter, and you don't get that in Wright.

I'd rather have beltran batting 2nd, but wright is a 20+ steal guy and can bunt, so I disagree with your logic.

i agree the mets are probably the best team in the nl but when it comes to baseball you have to give it up to those tricky tigers even without all those big names in there lineup there still winning more games than any other team

I'd argue now...finish interleague play and we'll see. If they reel of wins then, its hard to argue...but look at their division...it sucks...
