The Jets came up with a nice road win in week 1, holding on to 23-16 after getting out to a 16-0 lead. Here is a week 1 report card.
Quarterback-A
Pennington was all you could ask for in a comeback game, throwing 24-33, 319 yards and two touchdowns including the game winner to Chris Baker. He made good decisions and sharp throws all game. You couldn't ask for a better outing.
Running Backs-D
The running game never really got going. Derrick Blaylock rushed 19 times for 36 yards. Kevan Barlow was a little bit better, rusing 11 times for 35 yards a touchdown. Brad Smith did a little bit rushing twice for 13 yards, but not enough to make a difference on the ground.
Wide Receivers-A
Laveranues Coles had as good a game as he could have with 153 yards over 8 catches. Jerricho Cotchery did well in his first game as a starter, catching 6 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Justin McCareins added 2 catches for 34 yards, and even rookie Brad Smith got into the act, making his first NFL catch, a beautiful one hander for 13 yards.
Tight Ends-B+
Chris Baker caught 4 passes for 34 yards, including the game winning touchdown. Shawn Ryan was a non factor catching one pass for 10 yard and then coughing it up on a fumble.
Offensive Line-C+
The new look offensive line was not bad in their first outing, only allowing Pennington to be sacked twice. They never got the running game going however, with the ground game averaging 2.67 yards per carry.
Defensive Line- C- The only factor all day was Dwayne Robertson, who had 3 tackles and 1 assist. Shaun Ellis and Kemo von Olelhoffen were non factors with only one assist a piece. They didn't do much to stop the running game, with Chris Brown averaging four yards per carry and Travis Henry scoring twice on the ground.
Linebackers- B+
As athletic as these guys are, they made an impact, with Jonathan Vilma leading the team with 7 tackles and 5 assists, Eric Barton added 6 tackles and 3 assists, and Victor Hobson contributed as sack.
Defensive Backs- A-
These guys were all over Titan receivers holding Kerry Collins to a lower than 50 % completion percentage. Newcomer Andre Dyson contributed 2 interceptions, while Kerry Rhodes added one.
Kicking- D
Mike Nugent had an awful day, missing 2 field goals and an extra point. The only salvation is that it did not cost them the game.
Punting-A
Ben Graham averaged nearly 50 yards over 4 punts, a banner day.
Kick and Punt Returns-C+
Justin Miller averaged nearly 30 yards per return over 3 kickoffs. Leon Washington was a non-factor only average 5.5 yards per return on a couple of punts.
All in all , a lot of good things, yet a lot of things still to improve.
