It was a tale of 2 halves today at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinatti, Ohio. Two one wins teams battled it out, and in the end, the Jets came out on the short end of a 38-31 score.
The Jets came out very strongly early, Chad Pennington hit Laveraneus Coles with a 57 yard touchdown pass, quieting the crowd and his critics for the time being.
The Jets had a golden opportunity in the second quarter, up 10-3, Hank Poteat intercepted a Carson Palmer pass deep in the Cincinatti zone, setting the Jets up inside the red zone, but all they were able to manage was a field goal to make the score 13-3. Following this, Kenny Watson, filling in for the injured Rudi Johnson, capped a drive that took over 7 minutes with one of his 3 TD runs. The Jets ended the first half with a second Coles TD, putting the score up to 20-10 Jets at halftime.
The Jets took the ball to start the second half, and the drive ended in rather than a TD, a 43 yard Mike Nugent field goal. Then, in a major turning point, the Jets had the Bengals on a 3rd and 11 on the ensuing drive. Carson Palmer's pass fell incomplete, but a pass interference call on Derrelle Revis extended the drive ending in a Houshmandzadeh TD. 23-17 Jets. This was followed up by a 3 and out by the Jets, and a 20 yard punt off the side of Ben Graham's foot.
Another interference call on Revis led to the 2nd Watson TD, and put the Bengals ahead to stay. On the next drive, Pennington had a miscommunication with center Nick Mangold, which lead to a snap before the quarterback was prepared to receive it, turnover, 3rd Watson TD, 31-23 Bengals. The last ditch drive ended with a Johnathan Joseph 42 yard interception return for a TD. A hail mary TD from Pennington to Cotchery made for a too little too late score, 38-31 final.
Chad Pennington played well, hardly the sole reason for the loss, finishing 20-31 272 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT. The star of the game was Kenny Watson, filling in for Rudi Johnson, running 31 times for 130 yards and 3 big TDs.
