New England Revolution Deserve Upgrade in TV , Boston Globe Coverage

For a team that has over come so much to do so well, the TV and Boston Globe coverage are really bad. The Tv coverage is flat and broken up with frequent inappropriate commercials for Gillette Stadium. Haven't these announcers ever listened to Johnny Most? Even the undergrads who call the Harvard football games on WWHRB( radio) communicate more excitement and interest in the game's fine points than these guys. They sound bored and they are boring.

Ditto for Gobe columnist Frank Del Appa whose major strength seems to be reciting historical facts instead of game insights. who cares (this is just an example) that the Revolution had or hadn't scored in the first half since August 20th? What we want to know, for example, is what defensive mistake led to an opponent unmarked in our penalty area ? Soccer is a game of decisions and bad decisions can lead to goalsHis writing is full of that stuff. Isnt there someone in the greater Boston area who knows the game of soccer and can write well?

The problem is that the good writers for the Globe do not and probably will not write about the Revolution. They write about the Red Sox and Patriots for the most part, then Celtics, and then throw some hockey in the mix. Soccer is an afterthought at best. I'm not saying thats how it should or shouldn't be, I'm just saying thats how it is.

The other problem is the whole knowledge base thing. If we're lucky, writers have played soccer on a competitive level. But most people at newspapers are not very familiar with the sport. It takes time to learn about the little nuances of the game, especially since soccer is not very stat-crazy and thus harder to get across to people. Getting writers who know the sport is not high on newspaper's priority list, since at best serious soccer coverage is a niche in the U.S.
