After both teams punted away their first possesions, the Patriots struck first rumbling down the field for 82 yards on 11 plays. Corey Dillon swept left for the first score of the game. After stopping the Jets on the next drive, the Patriots drove down the field once again. This time for 87 yards which was capped off by a Stephen Gostkowski field goal which put the Patriots up by 10. The Patriots would continue to fluster the Jets offense stopping them on the next three drives.
The Patriots finished the first half with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to rookie wideout Chad Jackson digging the Jets into a 17 point deficit. The Jets continued to struggle in their first drive back from the half by failing to convert a 4th and inches play. With good field position the Patriots drove down the field for 45 yards leading to a Laurence Maroney touchdown run.
On the next drive Chad Pennington connected with Jerricho Cotchery for a spectacular touchdown as Cotchery was seemingly tackled by two New England defenders, only to spring back up and run 71 yards for a touchdown. The Patriots challenged the play claiming Cotchery's knees were down but under review the challenge was upheld as Cotchery had manage to stay up.
Less than five plays later, David Barrett picked off Tom Brady at the 19 yard line giving possesion back to the Jets. Chad Pennington would get help from his receivers once again, this time Laveranues Coles made his way through New England defenders for a 46 yard touchdown.
The Jets continued gaining momentum by stopping the Patriots offense and Mike Nugent tacked on a field goal to make it a one score game. On the next drive, the Patriots managed to shred 8 minutes off the clock causing the Jets to use all of their remaining timeouts as the Patriots advanced into field goal position. With just over a minute left in the game, the Patriots called on their rookie kicker, Gostkowski, to put an end to the Jets rally for good. With the crowd behind them the Jets' defense managed to block Gostkowski's kick and recover the ball at the 9 yard line.
Trying to manage time, the Jets drove up to the 45 yard-line with 15 seconds remaining in the game. As a last resort, the Jets' Chad Pennington lofted the ball in the air only to see the ball be picked off by Tedy Bruschi of the Patriots, allowing New England to take a knee to end the game.
