Well done and congratulations to the New England Revolution as they hoisted the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last evening in Frisco, Texas. The Revs defeated F.C. Dallas 3-2 in an absolute thriller of a Cup Final.
The Revolution opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Pat Noonan. The Hoops then equalized through a very well taken goal by Arturo Alvarez who scored from the outside of his left boot. Just before the half Taylor Twellman restored the lead to New England from a corner taken by Steve Ralston.
In the 57th minute Wells Thompson then stepped into footballing glory and entered the Revolution's history books by grabbing the third goal and the eventual game winner. It must be noted that Thompson was playing because Steve Nicol, the Revs head coach, had to replace midfielder Shalrie Joseph who was banned through a sending off in the semi-final match versus Carolina RailHawks. Thompson's second professional goal proved the deciding factor even though Dallas did pull one more goal back through the efforts of Abe Thompson.
So the New England Revolution, always the bride's maid and never the bride up until last night anyways, came away with the club's first ever major trophy. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was first awarded in 1914 and was orignally known as just the Open Cup but was renamed in 1999 to honor Lamar Hunt one of US Soccer's most important patrons. Congratualtions to the Revs and well done.
