New Attack on America Be Afraid

As many of you probably already know, there was a posting on an Islamic site (on Oct. 12) to bomb NFL games on October 22. This date celebrates the final day of the holy month of Rhamadan.

The targeted cities were listed as New York, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland and Cleveland. The device: a dirty bomb. "The death toll will approach 100,000 from the initial blasts and countless other fatalities will later occur as result from radioactive fallout," according to a copy of the posting that was obtained by The Associated Press.

Homeland Security has told the NFL that the threat is minimal and that they are skeptical of the seriousness of the threat. However, should such an event take place, it would be catastophic to not only the cities involved, but to the country as a whole.

As a recent spectator to an NFL contest, I am not all that sure that we could effectively keep such a weapon from entering a stadium. I was briefly patted down and still got into the game with an rather large knife. It would seem to me that a crew could easily get the pieces needed to construct such a weapon into a game.

I would appreciate hearing what other ACGM members think on this "problem" and the news story. You can read the article on most major news pages, but I got mine from http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,222219,00.html.

I thought I heard last night, that they would drive the van up to the stadium, not inside it. Looks like we need Jack Bauer and CTU to set up one of their famous perimeters.

As an American living in Washington D.C. terrorist attacks are very real. I was working on Capital Hill when 9/11 happened. That being said, first off we should take any threat of an attack on American soil as serious. We can ill afford to have another attack on this great nation. Now, I plea to all those out there who are going to or thinking about going to a game this weekend. Do not be affraid to go out and live your life as an American fan. Do not live in fear, and enjoy the gameday experience. We cannot allow our lives to be crippled because of the ignorant acts of a few.

A dirty bomb is a small device used to scatter radioactive material. The real danger in spreading radioactive material is that it wouldn't destroy an area per se, but it would expose many people to dangerous levels of radiation and render the area unliveable for a good while.

These threats were NOT credible. And they just don't make sense... radioactive material can't be concealed very easily or ieven in a vehicle. In case you didn't know this already, just about every major airport, hospital and city for that matter in North America is equiped with radiation sensing geiger counters to pick up on ANY transportation of radioactive materials. Equiping a stadium would not be difficult(if it hasn't ben done already)

You should fear being killed on the way to the game in a traffic accident more...

Manny I agree with you on a lot of what you said. However, a target is a target. A dirty bomb in the medowlands can do near as much longterm damage as crashing a plane into the World Trade Center. Like you said the radioactive fallout would be horrible. I do not believe these threats are credible and the people I know in Homeland agree as we all know. However, that being said we should acknowledge the threats but not allow them to keep up from enjoying what may be this countries greatest Sunday tradition.

I think his point was that the quote talking about people dying in the initial blast from a dirty bomb is just as misleading as the ridiculous picture this story carries.

Absolutely not. The amount of money alone lost in the attacks on the WTC because of lost financial reserves, gold reserves stored in the basement, currency trading, lost option expirations, etc. would be far greater than an attack on all NFL stadiums combined. The total lives lost wouldn't be as great, but the long term effect doesn't feel those things. It would be almost impossible to assembled a bomb unnoticed in a stadium, there are people everywhere. A dirty bomb is not at all like an actual nuclear weapon, and the loss of life would not be that high. You guys watch too much TV

exactly ASwaff... also the point of destroying the WTC wasn't about killing people, they thought it would bring the whole financial structure to it's knees. bin laden doesn't want to kill people, he wants to destroy America... if that means killing people, teh oh well, but that's not the motive. If it was about killing people, they would have taken steps to make sure people were AT WORK when they hit it... there's plenty of places to kill more people than were there (an LA traffic Jam for instance).

Tartan - the "gold" in the basement was never there to begin with. The markets shut down for the week, so trading was halted. And Options don't expire until the third friday (technically saturday) of the month... Even so, it's clear the financial industry survived (and their timing was poorly executed)

Tartan - find those figures and prove it. A major attack is a major attack. A lot of people getting killed is generally pretty bad for the economy, regardless of where it happens. Besides, one of the targeted cities was NEW YORK. Where's the NEW YORK Stock Exchange again? Oh, right.
Manny StilesMajor Leaguer

X - the New York Stock exchange is blocks away from WTC, but the majority of stock trades take places around the world (like I do all day in Phoenix) and as a general rule of thumb, the people dying is a wash, business wise but the buildings going down HURT the insurance industry. The companies doing business in WTC lost workers but then can replace them with cheaper (less experienced) labor. All in all, Tartan's right. People die all the time and money doesn't care.

WTC, Katrina, whatever... What's the number you hear that shocks people more? The number of people who died or the billions of dollars lost?

Good Business isn't moral or just, it's a bottom line. (If it makes sense, it doesn't make dollars)

Alright, $16 billion lost in "economic output." The gold sure is fun to think of though. The insurance companies did make up the majority of the $83 billion or whatever the estimate was. Booz Allen estimated that 57,000 lost jobs in relation to the attacks. Tourism loss estimations of $7-$11 billion through 2003, not to mention the still uncountable losses to the airline industry, still reeling. The changes that came about because of 9/11 have also cost money (well spent, but still money), 5000 lives, as callous as it is, can be replaced, the financial hit to the city is what Bin Laden wanted.

Why do these kinds of threats seem to come so close to election time? They don't come during bowl season, or for the Super Bowl, and there's only one time that I can remember that there was a threat during March Madness. Does it strike anyone as peculiar that our country seems to keep getting threatened right before elections?

The catch is that they're ridiculous threats until somebody ignores one and it happens, then everyone can't belive it wasn't taken seriously. Ridiculous threats could very well be part of the terroist game to get us back into thinking we're invincible and nothing will really happen until something huge happens again.

If this was not a 'credible' threat, then why did the FBI see fit to alert the NFL? Just becuase they can't back up threats with known chatter doesn't mean something can't happen.

I just saw this on ESPN - the FBI interviewed the person suspected of posting the threat on the site. He's in Milwuakee, and has no apparent ties to terrorism. The article also states, again (for those who were curious), that the NFL teams were notified "out of an abudnance of caution."

I was gonna say London was a more likely target than most for a dirty bomb. Financial center, historical importance, governmental hub, and it's a well known area that's more easily accessible (in all directions) by terrorist extremeists. A dirty bomb there would be MORE devastating than ANY football game (Super Bowl included)

A la July 7, 2004. The problem is that our government have apparently foiled many terrorist threats, one of which included someone just saying in passing that they wanted to kill someone else. In other words we are subject to propaganda all the time. A minor threat (which this is), is going to be public news, and will sound like a major threat to humanity. In reality, as safety etc. continues to grow, the terrorists will be out off, and simply not do anything.

London is rumoured to be attacked every week, when in reality nothing happens. THe government "foils" "plots" every week, so no terrorist is too wise to try it when everyone is looking.

And terrorists seem to hate George Bush more than Tony Blair for some reason...
