Born on August 5, 1943 in Dorris, California, Nelson Briles (Nelson Kelley Briles) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 14 year career. Briles broke into the bigs on April 19, 1965 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 3.50 ERA in 82.1 innings pitched in 1965, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Nelson Briles's best season was 1968, when he posted a 2.81 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 141 batters.
