Born on August 23, 1911 in Mount Morris, Illinois, Nels Potter (Nelson Thomas Potter) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Browns and Boston Braves over the course of his 12 year career. Potter broke into the bigs on April 25, 1936 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 6.47 ERA in 111.1 innings pitched in 1938, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Nels Potter's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1944, when he posted a 2.83 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 91 batters. However, others believe that it was 1945, when he posted a 2.47 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 129 batters.
