2006 Grand Prix - Final
Neil Robertson (Australia) beat Jamie Cope (England) 9-5
Neil Robertson became the first Australian in snooker history to win a world ranking event, after the World Number 12 overcame Jamie Cope in Aberdeen on Sunday.
The match featured two young players hoping to breakthrough onto the snooker scene. Both are sure to be members of the top 16 in future.
A kick cost Robertson the first frame, but he started brightly, leading 3-1 and going further clear at 5-2 going into the evening session. Robertson made a 100 break in Frame 2.
Robertson extended his lead to 8-2, but at that moment nerves set in. Cope came storming back to 8-5, before Robertson composed himself to take the match 9-5.
It could have been different - Cope missed chances at 4-2 and 6-3 - where he missed a brown with ball in hand - and lost frames he could have won.
Cope failed to produce the form he produced earlier in the week (where he made a maximum 147 break), as his safety play in particular let him down.
Robertson won the first of what could go on to be many ranking events in his career, and it will be good to see if he can continue this form in the rest of the season.
