Ned Mathews (Ned A. Mathews) was born on August 11, 1918 in Provo, Utah. After going to high school at Manual Arts (Los Angeles, CA), Mathews attended the University of California - Los Angeles. Mathews made his professional debut in the NFL in 1941 with the Detroit Lions. He played in the NFL for 4 years, playing for the Detroit Lions and Boston Yanks over the course of his 4 year NFL career.Mathews also played in the AAFC for 2 years, playing for the San Francisco 49ers the entire time.

Most people believe that 1943 was Ned Mathews's best year, as he picked off 4 passes and ran back a kickoff for a touchdown.
