Ned Hanlon (Edward Hugh Hanlon) was born on August 22, 1857 in Montville, Connecticut. He made his Major League debut on May 1, 1880 for the Cleveland Spiders. In 1880, his rookie year, he hit .246 with 0 home runs and 32 RBI. Hanlon played for the Cleveland Spiders, Detroit Wolverines, Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Burghers and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 13 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Ned Hanlon's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1887, when he stole 69 bases and knocked in 69 runs. However, others believe that it was 1890, when he stole 65 bases and hit for a .278 average.
