[edit] Biography

Edgar Edward "Ned" Cuthbert (June 20, 1845-February 6, 1905) was an American professional right fielder who played Major League Baseball from 1876 to 1884. He played for the St. Louis Brown Stockings, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the St. Louis Browns, and the Baltimore Monumentals. His batting Average was .219. He also played in the National Association, the first organized professional league, which at this time is not considered a Major League by historians.

Reportedly, Ned stole the first base in organized baseball in 1863 while playing for the Philadelphia Keystones. He simply waited for the pitcher to be distracted, and ran from first to second base. Unheard of at the time for someone to be running the bases without the ball being in play, the crowd on hand began to laugh, problem was though, there was no rule the specifically outlawed it, and the umpire agreed and allowed the play.

Ned Cuthbert died of Endocarditis in St. Louis, Missouri, and was laid to rest at Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Most people believe that Ned Cuthbert's best season was 1872, when he hit for a .338 average.
