Many New Jersey wrestling fans were elated when Rutgers hired Jackson Memorial High School wrestling coach Scott Goodale to take over the program for retiring John Sacchi.
The attractive part of the Goodale hire was the possibility of luring the nation's second-ranked wrestling recruit, Jackson's Scott Winston, to Piscataway and keep the state's top wrestler at a state university.
On Monday, Winston moved closer to wrestling for the Scarlet Knights as his father Scott Sr., informed InterMat that his son has verbally committed to Rutgers and his former high school coach. Winston, fresh off his Junior National Freestyle title in Fargo at 160 pounds, is a projected 165-pounder.
According to NCAA regulations, college coaches are prohibited from commenting on athletes that have not signed National Letters of Intent, so Goodale will not be able to comment.
Winston is undefeated in his high school career, winning two state championships. Winston was unbeaten his freshman year before an injury kept him from wrestling in the post-season.
Rutgers has a handful of All-Americans in its history, but come the early signing period, Winston will be the program's highest-ranked recruit in history. He chose Rutgers over Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin.
