Nady Traded to Pirates

13
Vote

The Pirates finally do something right. CBS reports that the New York Mets have sent outfielder Xavier Nady to Pittsburgh for starting pitcher Oliver Perez and reliever Roberto Hernandez. This is a fantastic move for the Pirates, as they get a capable hitter in Nady, and only have to give up a 2-10 starter and a struggling reliever to get him. Although Hernandez has 326 saves to his name, he is a 16 year veteran and his best days are clearly behind He was 8-6 with a 2.6 era and he blew 6 saves in 10 chances last year with the Mets. Hopefully this means a revival of the career of Oliver Perez?

This trade comes a day after the Pirates traded away Sean Casey to the Detroit Tigers.

I'm a Mets fan, and I like it. Nady is a good guy, and I liked him on the team, but this gives the Mets more depth at SP and RP w/o giving up much -- I mean, Milledge is a half-step worse than Nady at this point.

well im glad you're happy, but i don't understand why. Do you really think roberto hernandez is going to return to his old form? Oliver Perez has a 4.56 career era, and a 6.63 era this year

Bert was great for us last year. Perez is a worthwhile project. The Mets are going to go into the playoffs with a four player bench (Woodward, Franco, Chavez, Castro) and 13 pitchers. They now have 15 worth taking if not more. I'm glad to have options.

I agree. The difference between Nady's Bat/defense and what they'll replace him with is less than the difference between out for the year Duaner and Roberto. And if Oliver gets his head in the game it could be a really nice deal. Even if if both RH and OP get in a taxi accident, it isn't a huge hit to the Mets chances.

Clear sign of desparation by Minaya. These pitchers are barely serviceable, and now the Mets are faced with the prospect of Endy Chavez as the everyday RF, which is a noticeable downgrade in power. Milledge is not ready for prime time. This is just not a good trade. Confirms my suspicions that Minaya is just not that smart.

Why would the Mets give up Nady at this point in the season?

I guess that's why I don't understand it. It doesn't make much sense to me to acquire guys like Perez and Hernandez when it forces you to make roster moves to a team that's well ahead of the rest of the pack as it is.

It's because they don't need the production from Nady anyway.

Btw, the Mets made this trade because Duaner Sanchez is out for the year. He got into a car accident last night.

Mets gave up a lot for an average to below starter, and an over the hill reliever. Not a good move for the Mets, either in the short-term or the long-term.

It's certainly not a great move, and it's not going to make the difference in the playoffs/WS, but is it really giving up a lot?

How do you figure that? Where do you make it up? With big stick Endy Chavez? Milledge? The Mets clearly have a solid lineup, but no reason to degrade it especially if you are getting very little in return.

Don't look at the production of Nady. Look at the difference between Nady and the potential RFs. Is there a drop off? Sure. Is it enough to make a difference in wins and losses? Not so much. The loss of Duaner is a much bigger issue, and the Drop off from him to nothing is much bigger than him to RH. Not saying RH is great, but this deal really isn't that bad.

Huh? I think some of you are making a big deal about small potatoes. Mets traded Nady and Heath Bell and got Roberto Hernandez and Scott Linebrink. Milledge is an upgrade over Nady anyway. Milledge has more speed, power, and is a better fielder. the only thing he doesn't have is experience. But the Mets had a need when Sanchez got injured. The Mets traded from their depth. Nady will be decent enough in Pitt and will add an outfield bat to help Jason Bay. You feel bad for Nady because he goes from the best team in the NL to the worst. poor guy.

While I'm not certain Milledge is an upgrade just yet as he needs more seasoning, the rest is spot on. Especially the fact that this is a small potatoes deal.

This trade was purely made to fill in for the loss of Sanchez. On that front it's not bad. Hernandez has been more than adequate as a middle reliever, and Oliver Perez is a hard throwing lefty with potential. Giving up Nady doesn't hurt that much because he has a broken bone in his hand and has been on and off the DL, has been hitting .264 and with questionable defensive skills. Chavez has been decent, Milledge can be called up. Besides, Nady was going to be arbitration eligible at the end of the year and probably wouldn't be worth the price, and the Mets now can use Milledge and sign a different OF bat.

absolutely right. The mets had to make a move in desparation bc the loss of sanchez is huge. Not the best move i've seen, but had to be done.

Bottom line, this is a move that Omar had to make due to the unfortunate circumstances involving Duaner Sanchez. He had to find a way to replace Sanchez as a setup man. At this point of his career, Hernandez is best suited as a setup man. Hopefully Oliver Perez will right the ship with the Mets as he does have potential. You're not doing this trade if you're going to give up Milledge. The Mets need Endy Chavez as a spark off their bench for the stretch run. Nor are you giving up Cliff Floyd. Thus, the Mets had to part with Xavier Nady. I hate to see him go just as much as anybody. But the Mets took a big blow with the loss of Sanchez and they had to retailiate.

i have no idea why he traded for Oliver perez this guy has done nothing in his career.

he had one good season (2004) and he was only 2 games over .500 12-10 2.98 era. from what i have heard there was not much pitching starters or relievers available this deadline so i can understand the roberto hernandez acquisition but i hate that the mets dealt an ok player for junk again...(kazmir-for-"the wrong" zambrano). i need some explanation on why this deal was made (the Perez) part. with sanchez out they needed some help in the bullpen but i think they should give Heath bell some regular playing time. when he starts to get comfortable in the majors then send him back down to make room for someone else. give this guy regular innings and see what he can do.

and by the way i liked Nady i was very comfortable with him in RF. so what do they do after this season? re-sign floyd who is back to his injury ways again? milledge gets the call and becomes the everyday Lf then what?who plays RF? do you even give floyd more than a 1 yr deal? many questions to be answered.

Why trade for Oliver Perez? Are you serious? How about because he is a lefty with an amazing amount of talent who has performed successfully on the big stage. They made this deal for Hernandez. Perez was the throw-in. And if they can find something in his delivery, or if a change of scenery is enough to help him turn it back around, it could be the steal of the century for the Mets. As for next year, both Carlos Lee and Soriano could be available, not to mention Jermaine Dye, not to mention that the Mets still have all of their minor league players left to use in the offseason in any potential trades. I'm not happy that the deal had to be made, but it did, and Minaya did a great job under less than ideal circumstances.
