NHL players not following in the footsteps of Mr. Bonds

It was reported earlier today that not a single National Hockey League player failed the drug tests that were administered by the league in hopes of catching steroid abusers.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly had this to say about the issue; "I suppose it's safe to say that the results confirmed what we knew already, which is the use of performance enhancing drugs is not prevalent in our sport."

Two players, Brian Berard, and Jose Theodore, both failed doping tests administered prior to the Olympics. Berard was suspended from international play for two years, but not from the NHL, because the substance he used was not on the NHL's "hot list." Theodore was not suspended at all, as his positive test was a result of a hair-growth treatment that contains a questionable chemical.

The tests might have embarrassed a goalie going bald in his 20's, but it also helped establish the fact that the players in the NHL have integrity and respect for the game they love.

How tough is the drug testing in the NHL? It could be as lenient as MLB's and I wouldn't know. If that's the case, though, this article is pretty irrelevent.

Good point Corey, this could just be pure PR fluff.

Even if it is as lenient as the MLB's, in the MLB there are many, many players under suspicion. Every day there is a new player that someone thinks took steroids. In the NHL, you rarely ever hear a player even under suspicion (I don't think I've even heard 3 cases of a player under suspicion).

Well, that's probably because steroids won't help you skate better. Might help the slapshot out a little and maybe give a few extra bruises on a body check but that's about it.

I'm not too familiar with all the steroids and exaclty what they all do, but from what I understand, you inject them, and then whatever muscles you work out after injecting is what gets bigger. Hockey players have HUGE legs to begin with, to provide the power to skate fast. A hockey players core is the strongest part of their body. In the new NHL, speed is a necesity. Using steroids and then working out the core muscles could provide much stronger muscles, which in turn would provide speed. Runners are busted for using substances all the time. There is no need for upper body strenght in running, it's all in the legs. So obviously the runners use the substance for other muscles than their upper body. Using the steroids and substances helps you out no matter what part of your body you are using, and you still don't see NHL players using them or being accused.
