NHL Schedule changed for 2008-09 season

According to NHL.com the proposed schedule change for next year was approved by the NHL Board of Governors today.

For those of you who don't know the details of the proposed change, teams will now play against every other team in the league at least once.  Division opponents will face each other 6 times instead of 8, and will play every team in the opposing conference at least once either home or away.  The remaining 3 games will be "at large" inter-conference match ups.

I think it was that the Penguins and Devils played against each other at least 3 times per week?

Each team played the other teams in their divisions 8 times and rarely got out of the confrence. So teams in the West still haven't seen Crosby or Ovetchkin (SP). If the league wants to survive it needs to market those two. Gretzky Vs. Mario version 2.0.

Yeah, it was each team in your division gets played 8 times. Then it was each other team in the conference but not in your division four times each, and then two divisions (10 teams) from the other conference one time each. Frankly, I like the idea of everyone playing everyone else. It freshens it up, lets you see the other talents around the league too.

Ya know with 80+ games playing each team in the other conference twice is not a big deal. One home, one away. I think that's how the NBA has done it for decades. The whole point of playing that many games is to give every team in the league a chance to play each other.

For the record, I am in favor of these informational articles.

This sounds like a good idea. It'll definitely help freshen things up. Like Tryone said, it always looks like the same teams are always playing each other.

They are also probably going to open with four games in europe. Two in stockholm and two in Prauge. Prauge will be Rangers Vs. Lightning and the Stockholm is the Penguins Vs. someone.

Hooray! I got confused a few weeks ago. I saw that Detroit had beaten Chicago, and I wondered why NHL.com had put the result up a few days later. It turned out they had played again, with the same result.

Thankfully, we seen a change of heart with the NHL not so focused on divisional games. I would've been happy with 7 games vs. each division rival to compromise between the old and new schedule formats (then the team with four home games one year has three the next year against a particular opponent). As long as I get to see my team play everybody else at least once per season, I'm happy.
