Another exciting week of NFL football is now in the books. Many have surprised, while others have continued to struggle. Here is the week six headlines:
Playmakers- Peterson, Hester continue to make big plays.
The NFL's most promising rookie back, Adrian Peterson, of the Minnesota Vikings ran all over the Chicago Bears D for 224 rushing yards, and 3 TD's. Devin Hester, KR/PR/WR of the Bears, runs for his 9th KR/PR for a TD (89-yard KR) in a year and a half. He adds his first career receiving TD on an 81-yd pass from Griese in CHI's 34-31 loss to Minnesota.
Anderson, and Browns defeat Dolphins despite Cleo Lemon's great game.
In what was supposed to be a game revolving around offensive struggles, this game ended up being a shoot out between young QB's Derek Anderson, and Cleo Lemon. Anderson, and the Browns came out on top. Lemon, the Dolphins QB, threw for 2 TD's, as he ran for 2 as well. The difference ended up being turnovers. Lemon threw for 2 INT's, as Cleveland's starter, Derek Anderson, didn't throw a single INT. Anderson hooked up with WR Braylon Edwards 5 times, three of those five times were for TD's (24, 5, and 16 Yards).
Favre's great leadership leads GB to their fifth win.
Favre's stats weren't the best (19 for 37, 188 yards, 2 INT), but he was able to lead the Pack to a win over the tough defense of the Washington Redskins. Favre set the all-time record for most INT's in a career, with 2 INT's on Sunday (both picked off by Sean Taylor). Santana Moss, Washington's star WR, benched himself, and blamed himself for the 'Skins loss. Moss was held without a single reception, and fumbled on an end around, which was returned 57 yards for a TD by GB defensive back, Charles Woodson. There is no excuse for the 'Skins to have lost this game, but I don't blame Moss, I blame the 'Skins as a whole.
Bengals D continues to struggle, lose to KC in Arrowhead.
Despite Cincy's great offensive game, the Bengals lose to the Cheifs 27-20, as KC RB, Larry Johnson, finally breaks free with a 100+ yard game. L.J. ran for 119 yards, and a TD, as Tony .G sets the all-time record for TD catches by a TE with 9 catches, for 102 yards, and 2 TD's. Gonzalez broke Shannon Sharpe's record (62 TD catches). Cincinnati's offense accumulated 373 total yards, compared to KC's 354 total yards, yet, somehow the Cheifs came out on top. The Cheifs offense was able to score just enough points to come out on top. The Bengals could have easily won, their passing attack was flawless, with Palmer, and Houshmandzadeh hooking up 8 times for 145 yards, and 2 TD's. Palmer threw for 320 yards, and 2 TD's, but threw 2 INT's as well, and KC was able to capitalize on the Cincy turnovers.
NYJ's throwback unis. not enough for McNabb, and Philly.
The Jets, who were honoring the New York Titans by wearing throwback uniforms, couldn't reach the end zone on 4th down, and turned the ball over on downs with a few minutes remaining to lose the game. The Jets could not run the ball in the second half against Jim Johnson's defense, and Pennington was hit around too much, and 10 incomplete passes, 1 INT, and was sacked three times. McNabb hooked up with his new favorite receiver, Kevin Curtis, for 75 yards in the first quarter, as the Eagles flew to a 16-9 victory over the Jets. I guess we'll never see those throwbacks again, will we?
VY injured in Tennessee's 13-10 loss.
Jeff Garcia leads his TB Bucs to their fourth win (4-2) after a 13-10 win over the Titans. Garcia threw for 274 yards, and a TD (to Joey Galloway). Vince Young strained his quad, and was replaced by veteran, Kerry Collins, who threw for more yards, but only completed 50% of his passes. Garcia lead his Bucs down the field, and set-up a Matt Bryant GW 43-yard FG with :11 left. The Bucs are looking pretty good, as they are now 4-2, and atop the NFC South (tied with CAR).
Jones-Drew helps Jags to a 4-1 start.
Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jacksonville Jaguars RB, finally broke out with a big game. MJD rushed for 125 yards on just 12 carries!! For an average of 10.4 yds/carry. He powered the Jags to a 37-17 victory over their divisin rivals, the Houston Texans, who are now 3-3. Jacksonville QB, David Garrard had his best game so far this year, throwing for 221 yards and 2 TD's (completed 22 of 34 passes). The bg thing for the Jags, during their win, was the runnings game. As a team, Jacksonville rushed for 244 yards on 26 rushing attempts, and 2 TD's (9.4 AVG), their longest run of the day was a 76-yard run by RB, Fred Taylor. Houston WR, Kevin Walter had a big day (12 Rec, 160 yards), but QB Matt Schaub had an off day, held without a TD pass, and 1 INT (left game early, and was replaced by Sage Rosenfels).
Frerotte struggles, Baltimore D dominates.
With QB Marc Bulger on the bench, and back-up Gus Frerotte in, St. Louis struggles on offense, and is still winless. Frerotte, the veteran QB, threw 5 INT's (Cory Ivy, Ed Reed, Derrick Martin, Dwan Edwards, and Ray Lewis), lpus lost a fumble on offense, as the Ravens rolled to a 22-3 win over the winless Rams. St. Louis was also without RB Steven Jackson, due to injury, as the Rams were held to just 67 yards on the ground. That is all there was to this game, St. Louis struggles on offense again, and Kyle Boller and the Ravens were able to put up 22 points, and the Ravens D held the Rams to just 3 points. Boller will start again this week when the Ravens take on the Bills at 1 P.M. ET on Sunday. Perhaps it is time for McNair to retire?
Testaverde returns; Leads CAR to victory over ARI
Vinny Testaverde, who was signed by the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday of last week, made a comeback to the NFL, which turned out to be a great reunion with the NFL. I am sure the Cardinals wished that Testaverde lived on the west coast, Testaverde almost signed with Arizona, but decided against it, because it was too far away from his family. Less than a day later, he signed with the Carolina Panthers. Now, about the game, with Testaverde filling in for the injured Delhomme, he threw for 206 yards, and a TD, as he completed 60 percent of his passes (20 for 33). Testaverde's favorite target ended up being none other than the Por Bowl wideout, Steve Smith, as Smith caught 10 passes for 136 yards, and a TD. The Carolina running game did well, too, with DeAngelo Williams rushing for 121 yards, and a TD. With Warner only in for a little while (due to injury), Arizona had to count on third stringer, Tim Rattay, who let down the home crowd by throwing 3 INT's, and only completing 50% of his passes for 199 yards with zero TD's. Testaverde looks to prove that he is back to win, as Carolina has a bye this week, but he will get a real challenge, as they face Indy in two weeks.
Undefeated Pats, lead by Brady take on undefeated 'Boys, lead by Romo.
Tom Brady had a terrific game, as the Pats improved to 6-0 by defeating the, now 5-1, Dallas Cowboys. The game started close, as expected, until the Pats pulled away with a 48-27 victory in the second-half. Brady threw 388 yards, and 5 TD's (went 31 for 46). Brady, the favorite to win the MVP award, as of right now, hooked up with all three of his offseason acquired receivers, Moss, Welker, and Stallworth for a comined 24 Rec, for 319 yards, and 4 TD. So, it seems as though that was money well spent. Romo, and his Cowboys started off looking good, but was just flat-out outplayed by the superb Pats offense. That's the bottom line, the Pats can't be stopped.
L.T. breaks through with big game in SD's 28-14 win.
Ladainian Tomlinson looked like he was playing in his '06 form on Sunday, as he ran all over the Oakland defense for 198 rushing yards and he added 16 recieving yards on 3 receptions. L.T. rushed for 4 TD's as well. Oakland QB, Daunte Culpepper threw for 230 yards, but 2 INT's, and he was sacked 6 times (2.5 by Shawne Merriman). Culpepper just couldn't run free from the SD pass rushers, as he ran for just 5 yards on 2 carries, and was banged up alot. With L.T. running wild, and Culpepper in the pocket, the Chargers were finally able to get to .500, and they look much better than they have. SD added a WR today, as they signed former Miami receiver Chris Chambers for a 2nd round pick, he will add a second threat for Rivers, possibly a deep threat.
Saints pick up first win of the season; play like the '06 team.
Brees, and the NO offense breaks through Sunday night, and are relieved, and are much more confident, now. Brees threw for 246 yards, and 2 TD's, with Bush just 3 yards shy of having his first 100+ yard game of the season. The Saints D sacked Matt Hasselbeck 5 times, which ultimately helped the Saints defense, as they picked off a pass, and helped gain the momentum which carried them to a 28-17 win, look for the Sainst to win a few more this season, if they play like they did Sunday night.
Eli, Giants win fourth straight game.
After starting the season 0-2, the NYG have now won 4 straight games as they find themselves in second, behind the 5-1 Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. Eli threw for 303 yards, and 2 TD's, with 2 INT's. Manning just outplayed the shaky looking Joey Harrington, who wasn't looking good after being hit hard by NY's Antonio Pierce in the 2nd QTR on Monday night in ATL. NY has looked much better in their last 4 games, then they did in their first 2 games, and I think they can contend for an NFC wild card spot. On the other hand, I don't see ATL going anywhere with Harrington looking shaky, even though anyone can win the NFC wild card spots. I believe that Harrington could be benched by the end of the regular season, so be prepared to see some Redman, and possibly Leftwich. Maybe ATL should have signed Testaverde?
