NFL Team of the Decades

The team of the 2000's is, yes of course, the New England Patriots, who won three of four super bowls from '01-'04. But, the "Team of the Decade" for the rest of the decades in NFL history is more of a debate.

Here are the teams of the decade since the first Super Bowl during the 1966 NFL season.

1960's:

Green Bay Packers- Mostly because of head coach Vince Lombardi, and of course the fact that they won the first two super bowls beating the chiefs 35-10, and then the raiders the following year 33-14. Before the first Super Bowl the Packers won three NFL Championships in the 1960's ('61, '62, and '65).

1970's:

Pittsburgh Steelers- Won four Super Bowls in the '70's, beating the Vikings (16-6) in '74, the Cowboys in '75 by the score of 21-17, the cowboys again 35-31 in '78, and the finale was L.A. (Rams) in '79 by the score of 31-19. The Steelers defense was without a doubt the best in at least that decade, and possibly one of the best defenses in NFL history.

Runner-up:

Miami Dolphins- Won two Super Bowls, in 1972 (after going a perfect 14-0 during the regular season) defeating the Washington Redskins 14-7, and in '73 defeated the Vikings 24-7. The dolphins went to one other super bowl in 1971, but lost to the Cowboys 24-3. The dolphins were the only undefeated team in NFL history.

1980's:

San Francisco 49ers- Won four Super Bowls, like the Steelers from the 70's, the niners won seven of the possible ten division titles in the 80's, and had possible the best coach in NFL history, Bill Walsh, who sadly died recently of Leukemia on July 30th at the age of 75.

1990's:

Dallas Cowboys- The Cowboys, led by hall of fame QB Troy Aikman, and WR Michael Irvin (getting inducted into HOF this weekend), and soon to be HOF RB Emmitt Smith (not eligible for HOF yet). The Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 90's, and were certainly (then, and only then) "America's team."

Runner-up:

Buffalo Bills- They may not have won a Super Bowl, but every single year were right in the middle of playoff contention, and every year they just came up on the short end. They won four Division championships, and after three of them went on to the super bowl ('90, '91, '93). The bills reached the super bowl in '92 as a wild card team. They lost in the super bowl in 1990 to the NY Giants 20-19, and in '91 lost to Washington 37-24, and then losing two straight to the cowboys in '92-'93 by the scores of 52-17, and 30-13. So, despite being consistent and winning four straight conference championships, the Bills cam up short FOUR straight times! How embarrassing!!

2000's:

New England Patriots- Of course, I already told you that the Pats are the team of the decades of the 2000's. They had a second year QB take over for the injured Drew Bledsoe in 2001, only to win the super bowl, which was unexpected, the patriots have absolutely dominated the 2000's so far, and they are expected to win it all again this year. There is no need for a runner-up since they are so far behind these New England Patriots.

I disagree with the runner-up from the 1970s. The Dallas Cowboys won the same number of titles as the Dolphins and dismantled the Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. Sure, the Dolphins had an undefeated season, but the Cowboys had more Super Bowl appearances five compared to the Dolphins three and were always Super Bowl Contenders throughout the decade. Also, Miami had fewer playoff appearances. Dallas only missed the postseason once between 1970 and 1979, while Miami missed the postseason three times.

Yup, but Miami played in 1972...pretty good reason to be runner up right there...

You want to claim it is embarrassing that the Bills came up short four straight times. Yet how many other teams even had that chance to appear in four straight Super Bowls. ZERO.

Yes, Buffalo lost four Super Bowls in a row. However, instead of dwelling on the negatives, look at some of the things those teams accomplished with the K Gun, no huddle offense. Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, James Lofton are all in the Hall of Fame. Frank Reich led the greatest comeback in NFL history against the Houston Oilers in a wild card game, coming back from 35-3 to win 41-38. Let's also note that Kelly, Thomas, Cornelius Bennett, all did not play in that game. I know, I was there.

They ran over the Los Angeles Raiders by a score of 51-3, knocked off the Broncos 10-7 in a game that saw David Treadwell miss three field goals for the Broncos, handled the Chiefs 30-13, and beat the Dolphins 29-10 in the four AFC title games that preceded those Super Bowl losses.

That means they knocked off THREE Hall of Fame QBs for the right to go to the Super Bowl, in John Elway, Dan Marino and Joe Montana. Instead of bashing a team for what they failed to win, let's at least recognize the accolades they deserve for their accomplishments.

Runner up should be the Colts in the 2000's. Yes...they only have one title, but the number of games they've won combined with their title should give them a nod for runner up.

Yes, we all remember Scott Norwood, I have it mentioned prominently in my profile next to Steve Bartman. The thing about Norwood of course, is that he had NEVER made a FG of that distance on grass in his career, and in the 90 season, was 1 of 5 on FGs of 40+ yards on grass. Of course, had the Bills not had their defense on the field for 40:33, then things may have been different altogether. Finally, let us not overlook the fact that Jeff Hostetler hung on to the ball when he was sacked by Bruce Smith late in the second quarter for a safety, giving Buffalo a 12-3 lead. Had he coughed it up, and Buffalo recovered, it would have been 17-3 at that point, and the FG attempt would have been moot.

I'd put Denver as runner up in the 90s. They lost a Superbowl at the beginning of the decade and won two at the end.

2 reasons i disagree:
  1. Elway is a douchebag...should have been a Colt
  1. No one circles the wagons like the buffalo bills

It is far too early to crown a team of the 00s (pronounced "aughts"). The Colts could win two of the next three Super Bowls, or some random team could win three in a row, and there would be a real argument. And why no runner-up in the 60s or 80s? For the 80s it could be Washington.

Not likely, the way the Colts offseason played out, I say no second title for the next two years. There shouldn't be a runnerup in the 80's simply because the 49ers were so dominate. I don't know about the 60's, thats way too old school for me.
