NFL Playoffs Proposal

by user Pnatt

It's ridiculous how home-field advantage is awarded to a division champion team who has a worse regular season record than its wild card opponent. If a division champion faces a wild card team with a better regular season record in any of the NFL playoff games (with the obvious exception of the Super Bowl), it should always be played at the wild card team's home-field.

Sure it's possible; you just don't get any points for it. 8-P

yeah that's what I meant by the question. I know it's possible I was just wondering if it counts as a score. Well I know now.

There have been arguments made that the playoffs should be a straight seeding of the best six from each conference. That would take care of the original concern. A couple of years ago though, the NFC West would have been a lonely division...!

Yeah that would be the best and ideal solution to the problem. That would be similar system that used in the Australian Football League, whereby teams are seeded 1-8 based on their record, as there's no divisions or conferences just the one league.

That would suck. Division championships should mean something, and teams should be encouraged to do everything they can to win their division, not just reach the playoffs. If you just have the "Best six from each conference", you might as well eliminate divisions all together. There's no point to having divisions and not having the division championship mean something in the playoffs.

No it wouldn't suck. It would reward teams who win the most games.

But there's a reason, Pnatt, that up to a Billion People have access to watching the Super Bowl, yet most people couldn't name an Aussie Football team

What's that supposed to mean? I'm talking about the seeding of teams, not who or who doesn't know about the Super Bowl or Australian football teams!

Just because a league has a lot of money doesn't mean that its playoff system is successful.

The NFL has a successful system, while Aussie Football has yet to establish a proven system

What? The Australian Football League has a pretty good system and who says the NFL system is successful? The bye is often controversial...

Give one example of the bye being controversial. Outside your head, I mean.

Uhhh, the fact that the Chinese government wanted them to play in their Olympic stadium, the fact that combined, the league earns more than a lot of contries each year, and who says the bye is controversial? The in season bye is necessary so players don't severely injur themselves, and the playoff bye is standard tournament form.

What does money have to do with playoff seedings?

What does this have to do with the playoff seedings? Nothing. You're saying how great the NFL playoff format is over the AFL format. What exactly is your problem with the AFL playoff format? And why were you talking about the Chinese government for?

The fact that there is a government that wants their service. My problem is that in a league of 32 teams, with no divisions you would have a problem of no consistancy. By having divisions, you establish that each year you have 6 games, 3 home, 3 away against the same teams each year. Please stop leaving messages when you reply. I will check it when I get around to seeing it

But by establishing consistancy in the regular season, you set up as fair of a regular season, and make the playoffs with little controversy. The seeding is redone after each round, so after the first round that isn't a problem. But for the Wild card round, it is how it is because they idea is that if you can't be the best out of 3 other teams you play a total of 6 times, then you shouldn't get to play at home, and in an ideal NFL season, most teams will be about .500 so it shouldn't end up to be that big of a problem.
