NFL OT rule sucks

I've came to the realization that a lot of sports have crappy rules and I guess sometimes rather than make proposals you're better off taking it for what it is. However, there's one rule that I find a real kick in the teeth and that's the overtime rules in the NFL. I disagree with the NFL overtime rules as it's so arbitrary and sudden death. The fact that a game can be decided over a coin flip is ridiculous in the extreme. And what makes it worse is that the rules are appearently the same in the playoffs. The NFL should change this rule to make it fair.

My Proposal: A full 15 minute overtime period should be played and if there's no winner after the 15 minutes make it a tie as per usual during the regular season and during the playoffs each subsequent overtime period would be a full 15 minutes until a winner is decided.

I have created a petition: http://www.gopetition.com/online/10070.html

The OT rule has it's supporters and it's detractors. The league has debated it several times (I believe), but I don't think that it will change anytime soon.

But from what I've heard this rule has been very controversial and I can understand why. They don't have this rule in college football.

Pnatt, the CFL rules are:

"In the event that the score is tied at the end of the second half of a game each team will be given the opportunity to score using the following procedure.

The first team, as determined by coin toss, shall scrimmage the ball at the opponent's 35 - yard line, and may advance by consecutive series of downs until it makes a score or loses possession.

The second team will then scrimmage at the same 35 - yard line and proceed as above.

If the score is still tied the procedure shall be repeated, not more than once, or a winner is determined after both teams have had equal opportunities to score.

If a winner is not determined after two attempts the game will be declared a tie.

If the game is a playoff or championship game and a winner must be determined the same procedure shall continue until a winner is finally declared."

I prefer the NFL rule to the college rule. The college rule results in two separate games: the regulation-time game, which is the one we know; and the overtime-game, which is strategically very different. Field position battles are the "pitchers duels" of football. But the college OT game gets rid of that.

What if the NFL kept the OT like it was, but teams were allowed to win only with a TD. In other words, field goals would not be allowed in OT. This at least allows for the players to decide the game, instead of the kicker. This idea just popped into my head, so it may be a terrible idea. I'll have to think about it some more.

Yeah I thought about that as well but it wouldn't be a good idea cos it's still doesn't solve the problem about the other side onot having an oportunity to score.

If you lose because you allowed a team to score on their first possesion, maybe you should get a better defense. That's the only way the game would be decided on the coin toss. If they change it, I'd rather have a 15 minute OT period than the college system. Whoever is ahead when the clock reaches 0 wins. If it's tied, it's a tie, except for the postseason for obvious reasons.

I agree with this entirely. I say a full period of 15 minutes, dunno what you'd do in playoffs tho.

The problem with that is you'd see incredibly boring OT's because the teams would just want to sit on the ball and kill as much clock in the process of trying to score as possible. I mean you could be stuck seeing 11, 12, or 13 minute drives, which still is totally unfair to whoever doesn't win the toss. Teams would just be trying to get first downs and that's all. NFL wouldn't want that and neither would a lot of fans.

How is that any different than the 4th quarter of a tight game? The Eagles allowed an 8 minute drive against the Saints a few weeks back. If your defense allows 11, 12, 13 minute drives, you should get a better defense.

your semi right Pnatt. College Football is more talked about because almost everyone over the age of 22 went to college, and in big College Football schools, everyone goes to the game.

just because you know a bunch of people over 22 that you hang out with and they all went to school doesn't mean everyone does/has. More people go to small colleges than big univesities. The Pro game has exponentially the amount of fans. College teams have allegiances (which is pretty stupid if you never went to the school you root for...I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying it's stupid) Pro teams have world wide fans, whole cities, sometimes whole STATES root for NFL teams (including the overwhelming number of people who never went to college in America)

"Pro teams have world wide fans, whole cities, sometimes whole STATES root for NFL teams" You obviously have never been to the South, Ohio, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, etc, etc. To say that a team is more popular because even the whole state roots for them is ridiculous, and lacks all factual basis. Absurdity

The major (and only?) advantage to the NFL rule over the College rule is that in the NFL teams play to avoid overtime because they know they can lose the coin toss and get screwed if the let the game get to OT. In college, you know you'll have an even chance so teams are more likely to play for OT than for the win in the 4th quarter.

The more I think about the NFL OT rule the more I dislike it, teams only have to drive as far as field goal range and seal the deal! Imagine if they had the same system in the CFL! If you miss the field goal attempt you still win because of the single!

It might make sense in the regular season. We just have draws in the AFL as well but draws are rare anyway, only happening like 2 times each 176 game season. In the finals we play 5 minutes at each end.

Studies indicate that a shocking percentage of citizens of the US of A (as opposed to Americans from say Canada (being part of North America) cannot locate Canada on the map, much less something as exotic as Australia (if they can't take the time to learn what countries exist outside of the USA, why would they take the time to learn about something really werid like cricket, or the like). Other studies indicate that the first studies were conducted by monkeys.

America the ignorant Can't find Iraq http://press...146580209503 National Geographic, 2006 press release: six in 10 young Americans ages 18 to 24 cannot find Iraq on a map of the Middle East] Oh, and we are also ignorant of our own country [1] Kazakhstan Government To Combat Borat With Movie About Nomads (not sure why this turned up in the search results Can't locate Iraq? Well, they can't locate Louisiana either Are Americans Really All That Ignorant? Only 71% Americans can locate Pacific Ocean on a map

If a person can't even find the Pacific Ocean on a map, or even the USA state of Louisiana, why would care about what happened in the last cricket match in South Africa?

So, "why are most Americans so ignorant of sports outside of their country?": They are ignorant because they don't care to inform themselves about sports outside their country.

The NFL's Overtime Rules Need to Be Changed? Yes but it need's more changes then that!

NFL is the best sleeping pill ever made. That’s why they have 25 cameras to try to keep us awake! That’s why they put so mush money in pre games. The game by itself it’s almost always boooooring! The equally talented but smaller players, where do you think they go? To the CFL! Let’s not be afraid of the truth. The CFL give by far a better show than the NFL. In 2005 John Madden said «there are too many borings games in the NFL» I like to go a step further, «CFL is the best exiting football ever made! »

NFL got a lot to learn from CFL!
