NFL Mock Draft 2008, Version 1

by JMFlyer1454

I know the draft is over 200 days away but the NFL draft is one of my favorite sporting events of the year. I though I'd take a shot at a preliminary mock draft. It will obviously change. Most likely a lot. The teams are in a predicted order of finish, which will also change. A lot. I'm not an expert on all college players nor am I an expert on all 32 NFL teams. So if I overlooked someone or ignored a glaring weakness on a team, let me know and I'll use your comments when I make Version 2 in a month or so. With the 1st pick in the 2008 NFL draft...

Pick Team Player (Position, College)
1 Atlanta Falcons Brian Brohm (QB, Louisville)
2 Buffalo Bills Glenn Dorsey (DT, LSU)

4 Oakland Raiders Darren McFadden (RB, Arkansas)
5 Cleveland Browns (to Dallas) DeSean Jackson (WR, Cal)
6 Miami Dolphins Calais Campbell (DE, Miami)
7 New York Giants Dan Connor (LB, Penn State)
8 New Orleans Saints Aqib Talib (CB, Kansas)

12 Detroit Lions Mike Hart (RB, Michigan)

14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Matt Ryan (QB, Boston College)
15 Chicago Bears Kenny Phillips (S, Miami)
16 Cincinnati Bengals Sedrick Ellis (DT, USC)
17 Carolina Panthers Tyson Jackson (DE, LSU)
18 Washington Redskins Early Doucet (WR, LSU)
19 San Francisco 49ers (to New England) James Laurinaitis (LB, OSU)
20 Seattle Seahawks Frank Okam (DT, Texas)
21 San Diego Chargers Ray Maualuga (LB, USC)
22 Jacksonville Jaguars Colt Brennan (QB, Hawaii)

The Steelers drafted LBs with thier first two picks this year, I don't think they will spend a first rounder on LBs again. If they lose faneca look for them to adress the o-line.

I agree they probably have to look at the o-line. But the linemen left I didn't think warranted 1st round consideration, as of now. However, they could look at tackles Tony Hills (Texas) and Barry Richardson (Clemson) or guard Eric Young (Tennessee).

Chris Long is a top 10 pick. Any team would be stupid to let him fall that far.

He has definitely been climbing and could easily be a Top 5 by the time the draft rolls around. I could possibly swap Long for Campbell at 6.

It is hard to argue against the Patriots right now. And I definitely think the Cowboys are the team to beat in the NFC. I just can't see anyone beating the Patriots, unfortunately.

Question; Is the person selected 32nd in the NFL draft worthyof 32nd pick money or 33rd pick money...i know it may be small potatos to the team, but for a player who could potentially not have a career longer than a few years its significant...

That is a great question, considering some debates we've had recently like with Eli Manning and Brady Quinn. That will be a tough one for both the players agent and the team. Using my prediction the Falcons could be in quite the conundrum.

Two comments. One: if the Chiefs don't take a quarterback, they're insane. Second: if the Redskins don't take an offensive lineman or a pass rusher, they're insane.

I agree...and I think they'll have a shot at Brohm or woodson at the end of the season...

I do think the Chiefs should take a QB but I think Herm Edwards is going to give Croyle a chance. If he doesn't get the chance this year then he will have to next year. If Croyle plays a significant amount this year and Herm decides he isn't the QB of the future (which everyone else realizes), the Chiefs at 3 would definitely consider Andre Woodson.

And if the Redskins hold onto this pick until draft day it'll be a miracle.

I'm insulted you basically have Oakland finishing 4-12 when I think they have 6-10 potential. (It seems small but when your team has gone 4-12,5-11,2-14 you think 6 wins is playoff caliber.) But the thought of having Darren McFadden running wild arcoss the backfield is inriguing, I'm intrested to see how your upcoming editions turn out.

I'm nowhere near sold on these predicted NFL standings. After all we are only 3 weeks in. Version 2 will come out after week 6 or 7 so we should have a better understanding of all the teams. I'm sure things will shuffle significantly by then. I agree they have 6-10 potential but we'll see if they realize that.

Can New England trade for a Round 1 pick? And will they then be able to take that pick?

Yes. They are only penalized their own 1st round pick (in this case #32). They already had a deal with San Francisco during last years draft (for pick 19 here) and Commissioner Goodell said they would be keeping it.

How do you figure? It's done by overall record, not playoffs. Only the Super Bowl participants are disregarded base on record. The SB loser goes 31st and the winner goes 32nd. The other 30 positions are strictly by record.

Why would the Cowboys pick up a WR that early? Kenny Phillips anyone? (He's rated way too low)

The Cowboys need a receiver at some point in the 2008 draft. It doesn't seem like a glaring weakness right now because of TO but he and Glenn are old. The Cowboys need a young receiver to groom for when TO and Glenn are gone. The Cowboys could take Phillips with the Browns pick; another DBack to complement R. Williams and Newman is also a must. However, DeSean Jackson is the best WR in the draft and they won't get him at 31. If they take Phillips early then they'll have to hope for Doucet or Sweed to fall. I don't see either of them being there at 31.

Garcia, Gradkowski, L. McCown, or Simms. While Garcia is decent, he is just a replacement until they find and groom a young stud. That won't be Gradkowski, McCown, or Simms. They need a young QB like Matt Ryan.
